go look at the code list on the end of the door. get the GUx code (code will be GU then a single digit).

i *think* the following codes mean the following gears (not sure, but i'm sure someone will correct me if i'm wrong):

GU2: 2.something
GU3: 3.23
GU5: 3.42

If it's a auto it's either 2.73 or 3.23. 3.23s are more desirable.

that depends on your preference and what you're looking to accomplish. with all other things equal, a higher gear ratio will run at higher rpm's for a given speed in a given gear. car will feel 'torquier' with a higher gear ratio.

If you think that somebody has changed the gears before you, there is a calcualtor somewhere on this wonderful internet, which will calculate the ratio for you by using certain parameters you give (tire diameter etc.).

Don't remember where that is right now, though... I'm sure somebody will pitch in with either the link or the formula how to do it.

i've got one idea: 3.42

So, I have an A4 with 3.42's. Is this a good thing, or should I be looking to get new rear gears? I was thinking of dropping a torque converter in at some point.

A4's didn't come from the factory with 3.42 gear ratio. Only 2.73 or 3.23. The 3.42 was in the m6.

Well, see above. GU5 apparently means 3.42. It says GU5 plain as day on the door label on my car. I have an automatic. I don't have an explanation for you, since I bought the car used.

Ok we were ALL wrong. I just called the local Chevy dealer. I have the 3.23 rear end. The code for that is GU5, the 3.42 gears are actually GU6.

Oh, and the Positrack option is designated by the G80 code. I have that too.

I like my 2.73's i can almost pull a 2.0 60ft (think it's like 2.045) with stock drivetrain and stock suspension, with the few mods listed below, plus i get better gas milage and can go 160+mph<<<<<<<like you need it...lol
