There are two light beams at the start of a drag race, and these beams are associated with the Pre-Stage and Stage lights on the Tree.
The Pre-Statge and Stage beams are generally located 6-7 inches apart and the distance the tire moves between the beams is called the "roll out".
The Pre-Stage beam provides the driver notification that he/she is 6-7 inches away from the Stage beam.
