SLP lid users, heads up.

Other lid brand users might want to check too, but SLP owners for sure.

When I took the SLP lid off my recently departed SS, I noticed a wear mark under the neck where it had been hitting the radiator support. I wondered how that affected the lid to filter seal. So today I decided to check the seal as I installed it on my new ride.

I used white grease on the top edge of the paper filter rubber seal, then popped the lid on. Sure enough, there was absolutely no grease transferred to the lid all along the rear edge! So I used the wheel on my bench grinder to whack the spot on the neck (being carefull not to grind thru) with the wear mark, but there was still a gap with no seal on the rear edge:

That's because now the trailing edge of the bottom of the neck was hitting the radiator support:

Wouldn't do much good to grind neck there cause the hose clamp wouldn't conform to the ground out area anyway, figured clamp band would still push neck up. Thought about using some strip type foam insulation on lid, but didn't: 1. If I used it just along back, might not allow other areas to seal, if I used it all around might be too tough to clamp down the lid, hard enough as it is. If a piece of foam came off, guess where it goes.

So instead I just used duct tape on back edge of filter support to raise the back of the filter enough to seal against lid. Had to use a few layers, about 1/8", but it worked. Now I have peace of mind.

Thanks for the "heads up". Just went and checked.

I have an MTI lid, and it hasn't rubbed the support.

Re: SLP lid users, heads up.

My slp lid came with a piece of foam tape that stick's to the bottom of the lid to seal it to the air box. I will check to see if mine is hitting like your's did.

I noticed this RIGHT off the bat when I installed mine, but I had attributed hte problem to this being a cheap-o ebay knock off that had a fake SLP logo... I didnt think much of it, I suppose mine is a real SLP part. I just took a dremel to the radiator support and cut out about a 1.5" slot from the air box back. I can take pics tomorrow

The old LS1 motorstport lids will gap in the back also. Nothing a little foam stripping didn't fix.

Re: SLP lid users, heads up.

While we're on the issues of Lids:

I bought a whisper Lid a couple of weeks ago, and the think just seems to fit crappy. The two clamps are ALWAYS popped off whenever I lift the hood. It takes me forever to get both clamps down without them popping off, and even when I do, they pop off later. The bellow from the MAF to the TB also seems to be more restricted in length then it should.

Anyone else have this issue? Or do I maybe have a mis-machined Lid. I shouldn't be surprised, the place I bought the Lid from ALWAYS seems to sell me bad stuff that doesn't fit like it should

The stuff I used is pretty much the same thing, only thicker. It has the adhesive on 1 side. Just foam weather stripping you can get at any harware store.

Re: SLP lid users, heads up.

make sure you're getting the lid lined up properly or you'll have that problem with the clamps popping loose. The factory lid will do the same thing when you don't get it on there right. It just did it to me the other day, it was freakin' me out.
