I guess that COMPLETELY makes the Hummer T-shirt I bought at WDW in the gift shop for the "GM Test Track" ride completely irrelevant now...seeing as how its a white shirt with red, white and blue H's arranged to make an American flag.

Bastards...I'll bet that awesome ride, that attracted a TON of attention to GM, won't make it through BK either. I talked to one of the GM reps working it, and he was concerned because GM's contract with Disney was ending this year IIRC...

An American company would be foolish to buy it at this point in time. Could it be considered a minor positive note that China is purchasing something from America and not the other way around, for a change?

Is it really that "iconic?" The way I understand it, GM simply purchased some naming rights from AM General after The Gulf War to capitalize on the popularity of the name. The term Hummer may be popular, but it's not like it's the same thing as the military fighting vehicle.

I think not. It's a relatively new brand with little past history.

IMO, it's an icon for failure.

It's a vehicle brand that GM is selling because it's not profitable (enough) for them. It's not profitable enough because not enough people want to buy them.

So the Hummer is an unprofitable vehicle that not enough people want to buy. Hummer = "failure." Good riddance.

If they want to sell them in China, sure. Though if there were a market for that to happen, I'd rather GM had kept the brand and simply sold it there but not here.

But if a Chinese company has bought it and they want to keep selling Hummer-branded vehicles here (presumably built in China, since I doubt GM is selling the Shreveport plant where the H3, Colorado, and Canyon are built, same for the AM General H2 facility in South Bend), I'm not a big fan.

No it is not the same as the military fighting vehicles, but that is not what I was referring to. What I meant was, Hummer is as American as it gets. Big, bold, in-your-face, un-apologetic, and fun. Everyone knows it is American. It is like Jeep in that respect. What other country would produce the Hummer brand? I guess we know that answer now.

How is buying up American assets a good thing? It would only be positive if they were buying the vehicles while still be owned by GM so the money flow continues to flow to our economy. They are not purchasing from America, THEY ARE PURCHASING AMERICA.

In this case, they are purchasing America's money pit... the symbol of the failures of the US auto industry. We are better off without it.

I find things like the Corvette, Ford F-series trucks, etc, infinitely more "American" than the Hummer.

The NYT described it as an "obscure Chinese machining company" that basically has decided it wants to dabble in cars. Unbelievable.

I agree with Sneaky Neil. This isn't a case of China buying our products for a change, this is China buying out our business. I don't consider that to be the same thing OR necessarily a healthy thing.

Good riddance, let them have it. It's not like they just bought Pontiac or Ford. This is Hummer for crying out loud. The brand is terrible.

They are buying bad business. My point is, consider the reason it was for sale in the first place. There isn't a waiting list to buy a Hummer these days. No one is buying the product. If it was being sold because it was a successful business, that would be one thing. They are buying from us what is not working.
