I am absolutely in love with this sexy machine.

 

Some people post on the Internet that they do not trust their privacy to OnStar...but then again...if they are that concerned...they probably shouldn't be posting on the Internet. I gotta believe that the Internet is far less regulated than OnStar.

Who recommended it? Just wondering if it wasn't more of a sponsorship thing.

Either way, I have used it in my 2010 Camaro and found it to work very well.

 

It's a little bit of a bummer to me not to have a sunroof. Sort of Z06/ZR1-esque of Chevrolet. After having one in my 2010, I find I really like it. Being a short guy, I don't need that extra headroom like Chris needs...

I see a lot of posts about how the nav shouldn't be a big deal. It wasn't a deal breaker on my 2010, and it likely wouldn't be on this. However, navigation is nice. Turn by turn works for a specific route, but it is also nice to be able to browse for restaurants, gas, or whatever, when you are in another town. There are a lot of things that are nice to have, that an audio only, one step at a time, system cannot provide. Nav can also make radio controls and displays look very nice, along with having a larger backup screen than a rear-view mirror. I do have the Nuvi in my car now. I actually love the way that a Nuvi operates. However, the hanging cord and lovely suction-cup remarks that remain when I remove it (so as to not invite someone to break into the car) leave a little to be desired in the area of styling.

I have been o.k. without having it. But doesn't it just seem a little strange that there doesn't appear to be much movement toward adding it? Don't most vehicles have navigation? Corvette? Mustang? Porsche? Challenger?

 

I think the desires of the having the nav screen go beyond navagation The integration of the rest of the car really, like sync and my ford touch are just cool conveinences. Because when it comes to actual navigation, I know more people that prefer the ease and superior accuracy of Onstars turn by turn directions, for which you can do ANYTHING a traditional nav can do . You can do alot of things sync will do, you just dont get the fancy display or voice commands.

You mean none that you know of. Remember, this is a 2012 showcar based on a 2011 car. If any solid interior changes for 2012 are to be made in the future, they may not be shown in this "prototype" ZL1. Just saying...don't let this car be an indication of the "final" 2012 model as a whole.

And on a side note, in my opinion only...
I don't see the big deal for a factory nav, at least not enough to make it a deal breaker. I know that having a cool stereo/nav/entertainment unit in a vehicle is good to have, I have had a few myself. But for it to be the difference between getting an incredible car and getting a lesser car (again, my opinion) seems to be a stretch and here is why...

From what I am told, the cost of the factory nav is reduced quickly due to depreciation...just like computers...which is what they really are. In most cases, cars depreciate as well so you are putting an expensive computer that depreciates into a car that depreciates as well.

If you have three cars with factory nav (your car, spouse car, and a weekend cruiser) you have...$3,000-$5,000 invested in it that you will surely never get half of that back in resale. Plus, for literally 1/25th the cost, you can grab a higher end Garmin and use in any car. Not quite as cool, but financially it makes sense..

It all depends on where you place your values, of course. I also know that it is cool as hell to have kick *** electronics in any car. For me, definitely not a deal breaker because I myself put focus on the "performance" in performance car. If it was offered, I would probably add it but it wouldn't stop me from buying the car. Not in this case, anyway.

But to make everyone happy and to keep the car features competitive, I hope to see a nav in the Camaro soon.

 

It might have been since Chevy was such a heavy presence here but all the newscasts were saying to turn off the nav units unless it was On-Star since they had real-time updates for the streets around the stadium.

 

I agree on the Nav thing. Factory nav is cool but I would try to avoid paying extra for it. If it doesn't have it great, if the only way I can get the car is to pay for the factory nav, it's not going to be a deal breaker. No big deal to me.

 

While I love my Garmin and use it all the time, I just don't see a great spot to mount it in the Camaro. Factory NAV, or at least the option of one, would be a much better alternative. Heck, with all the bells and whistles offered on the ZL1 (including a back-up camera), it should come with NAV standard. I suspect if it weren't for On-Star, it would probably get it.

 

Good point on the 'prototype.' Maybe, just maybe....

With respect to where I place my values - there was a touching story in this week's podcast about a dad who said that he'd throw the stroller on top of his brand new Camaro's hood, if that's what made his little daughter happy (much more to this story, so listen if you haven't heard it). My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves to watch 'map' in my truck. My son used to love it before he got older. If she wants to see that map, I pay $2000 and it is worth $0 when I drive off the lot, so be it. Just add that to my growing list on why I'd like to have navigation :>

 

Both a back up camera and NAV would be nice. I added a backup camera to my 2010 shortly after I got it because I was uncomfortable with the rear vision. Now that I've been driving it, I use the camera only about 25% of the time. For the factory to add a camera, it is relatively simple using the rear view mirror screen. To add NAV would take a redesign of the audio and dash. With my wireless camera and Garman it works just fine. Less than 24 hours until I see the ZL1 at the Chicago Auto Show. I can't wait!
