Perhaps. I am certainly no expert on the subject, so I will default to those that are.

Cool

Shift Pattern Warning!
Can't wait to get to the dealership and test drive a manual six-speed? Heed this warning: Do not test drive a manual trans V-6 Camaro after test driving a manual trans Camaro SS. We almost wrecked $60,000 worth of Camaros, so we're not joking. Both V-6 and V-8 Camaros have six-speed manual transmissions. Reverse gear on the V-8 is in the normal place--to the right and up. On the V-6 (which sports an Aisin-built gearbox instead of the Tremec), Reverse is to the left, and up--that's exactly where First is on the SS. Driving the V-6 after a long day behind the wheel of an SS, we almost front-ended the Camaro behind us--twice--on a steep uphill after waiting for a green light. Doh! Can we suggest a reverse lock-out ring for future V-6 models?
Look hard. The manual shift patterns are very similar between V-6 and V-8 Camaros, but with one really minor--and potentially very dangerous--difference. Never was there a better argument for a reverse lock-out on the V-6
This is the one that got me almost immediately when we did our test drives of the V6 and V8 car back in February. I was in the V6 car first, put it in first, and it immediately starting backing up.

No.

V8:
1 2 3 R
2 4 6

V6:
R 1 2 3
X 2 4 6

(x is just a placeholder to get things to line up; there's nothing there)

So the V8 pattern is as God and Borg Warner intended, and the V6 pattern is an abomination of some sort...

thats not that bad. im sure it would be really odd to get used to after hopping out of a v8.porsche has the same shift pattern. you have to really jam it over to get it into reverse on a porsche. i dont think it would be that easy to slide it into rev. without noticing, is it?

I think the problem is doing it from a stop (when none of the lockouts would be engaged). R and 1 are really close to each other on the V6, and you do the same move (left and up) to get there.

Especially if you're used to not worrying about it (as in the V8), it could be pretty frustrating (and even dangerous) to hit R when you meant 1.

yeah, that would be a bad day if you put it in R instead of 1 at a light and hit the guy behind you.

Post Re: 20 Facts About 2010 Chevy Camaro

It is a problem. And a BIG one. I have done this 4 times now. The last time I almost hit a COP! LOL This car needs a lockout ring. No doubt about it.

The way the car determines if you go into "R" or "1" is by how fast you shift it to that gear. If you shift slow, it goes into "1". If you shift to fast...."R"

My problem is that I listen to the radio fairly loud and do the seat dancing thing so.... if I am jamming along, come to a stop light and shift it to fast into 1st.... it will go into "R" and take a backwards trip when the light turns green. It sounds funny, and in fact has been funny. However, I am sure that when I actually do hit someone that is to close behind me, I wont find it funny at all!!

Another issue for me is the damn GOVERNOR! WTF???? I can not change it without voiding the warranty. And the governor is set by the factory according to the tires they put on it? How dumb is that? SOOOOO..... you sell me a car that has a top speed of 157 mph and set the governor for 118 because you put some tires on it that cant handle going any faster?

It's a liability thing. People don't like to be responsible for their own actions anymore. Instead of risking getting sued because someone thought it would be a good idea to see top speed on the wrong rating tires, you have to buy the correct setup from the factory.
