Exclamation 2011 DEXOS motor oil requirement - GM Vehicles

All 2011 GM cars / trucks require DEXOS spec engine oil. If you don't go to the dealership for your oil changes, save your reciepts / proof of purchase for your warranty.......

For more info, go to their site for news and approved oils:

http://www.gmdexos.com/home.html

General Motors is committed to designing, building and selling the best cars in the world - and to making the experience of owning a GM vehicle one of the best. That commitment even extends to the oil put into a GM engine. Oil is a vital component of any engine and helps it run at its peak performance.

That's why GM Powertrain Fuel and Lubes engineers developed the dexos™ engine oil specification. The result - an engine oil designed specifically for your GM engine with added performance in areas important to its operation and maintenance. dexos™ is a high quality, robust oil that will contribute to longer drain intervals (meaning a customer can go longer between oil changes) as well as improved emissions performance, fuel efficiency and engine protection. And, just like GM, it's global. That's because the same quality oil needs to be available everywhere.

dexos™ is the recommended oil for any GM car. It's that simple.

Don't take unnecessary risks with your powertrain warranty. Using engine oils other than dexos™ may result in damage to your engine that is not covered.

Warranty voiding? I don't think so.

Jezus what a joke. Funny how the "old oil" has worked so well that it needed to be changed. Sounds about up there with the new light bulb requirements, just a new way to get money out of your pockets.

I've been follow this thread on another forum for awhile about this topic..

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums...Number=1798252

It appears companies are adding it and its not going to be just a GM dearlership oil, like synchromesh was for awhile...

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (10/05/10) -- When you have the oil changed in your 2011 GM car, you'll be paying a lot more.

In return, you'll be able to travel 10,000 miles before it's time to do it again.

The oil in the engines of these new Buicks is a higher quality than many motorists are used to. It's a new grade called dexos. It's better than conventional oil, but not as durable as synthetics.

"Right now, GM is doing this change. The fact of the matter is GM is really just a year ahead of the industry," Kettering Mechanical Engineering Professor Craig Hoff said.

Other carmakers are expected to follow suit in 2012. Dexos can better handle higher engine temperatures and has additives to prevent the corrosion E-85 fuel can create.

"With the changes in the fuel economy standards and with the emission standards, the automakers are having to be much more aggressive with their engine designs," Hoff explained.

Dexos-rated oil won't be available at GM dealerships for another week, but there are some synthetics that will do just as well.

"We are using Mobil 1 in the 2011s or anything calling for dexos," Suski Chevrolet-Buick Service Manager Gus Engelhardt said.

Some oil change businesses advertise they carry oil that qualifies to be called dexos. The new grade of oil isn't cheap.

"It's going to be $15 an oil change more than you're paying right now," Engelhardt predicted.

But the good news is you can go longer between oil changes.

"Instead of the 3,000 mile oil change, you can look at changing oil every 10,000 miles," Hoff said.

"It's really going to save you money in the long run," noted Engelhardt.

Even though GM says a dexos grade of oil is required in its 2011s, nowhere in the engine compartment will you find a warning.

If you want to use dexos in your older car, automotive technicians say it won't do any harm.

If you have questions about your vehicle's oil and lubrication requirements, check with your dealer.
If 10,000 mile intervals are guaranteed, and other car companies are adapting the standard, I don't see a problem. Progress.

Re: 2011 DEXOS motor oil requirement - GM Vehicles

I heard about this a few weeks ago. My 2011 should be here in the next week or so. They are probably using the Delco stuff, does this mean it's synthetic?

Edit:
Answered my own question:
"As part of the agreement, ExxonMobil will also market General Motors’ new semi-synthetic engine oil, ACDelco dexos1 5W30, to be launched later this year in the U.S. and Canada."

Another little tidbit:

If dexos1 is not available, acceptable substitute engine oil for 2011 models includes:
· SAE-5W-30 viscosity grade oil displaying the API Starburst symbol for all 2011 model year vehicles with naturally-aspirated engines, except Corvette, Camaro SS (with LS3 engine) and CTS-V
· SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade oil meeting the GM4718M specification (such as Mobil 1 Full Synthetic) for 2011 model year Corvette, Camaro SS (with LS3) engine, CTS-V and vehicles with turbocharged engines

My 2011 came from the factory w/ Mobil 1 5W30. I changed the oil myself around 1200 miles w/ Mobil 1 5W30. Guess what oil I will use next oil change? Mobil 1 5W30.

MOBIL1 is DEXOS certified, so you're good.

The key thing here is that Dexos is a spec, not a brand. Any aftermarket oil can test itself and get certification.

Yup, so this isn't a case of GM trying to corral someone into using THEIR oil, just one that meets a certain spec. You don't want to use junk oil in today's engines, anyway.

So basically, Mobil 1 is still fine since it has had that GM4718M specification forever along with some other GM spec.

Chevron, Valvoline, & Castrol say they have no plans to get "Certified"

Well then GM won't have any problem supplying owners with an unlimited supply of their warranty required oil, right?

Or they can have press release along with other literature stating that the car will need a certain oil before the sale and make any potential buyers that only certain oil is satisfactory. It is then your decision to buy the car or not knowing this information.

It is not going to be a problem however, since GM has required oil to meet GM's GM4718M specification for a while now in their LSx engines. It is specifically stated in the manual that using oil that does not meet this specification may damage the engine. This DEXOS standard is going to be no different.
