$10k seems about right although many dealers will mark it up even more I am sure. But this goes back to the old logic, if people are dumb enough to pay it, the dealership is going to charge it. Let's be honest here however. There are only a handful of members at most on this board that could actually afford this car with the markup or not. This is why I don't get all worked up over cars like these. Sure, it is a badass machine, but it's not like I can buy one anytime soon .

As long as you have the typical American that has to have the newest toy to one up the neighbors you will have these ridicluous markups. I just refuse to buy from any dealer I see pulling stuff like this, I'm talking about buying any car form them not just a halo or something. If I walk into the Dodge dealership and see an SRT-8 for $5k markup you can bet I won't be buying an Avenger or Ram truck form them. It should be illegal to sell above MSRP and if manufacturers new better they would have some clause in their contracts with these dealerships to prevent this kind of fraud.

I dont like this crap either, but making it illegal is going way to far. And I am sure if you owned a product that is in high demand you would do the same.

GM/Chevrolet cannot make it illegal...that would be an anti-trust issue. Crazy, eh?

Re: 2012 camaro zl1 mark up

Dealer markups are nonsense and usually just a way to make consumers feel good that they end up getting the vehicle for MSRP at the end of the day.

At least in this economy thats my opinion.

After 30 years of buying new cars I've never paid "dealer Markup" If a dealer wants over msrp they can literally kiss my @ss before they will ever get my money.

good to see one of the supporting dealers of this site mention he does NOT even attempt to get over MSRP for a vehicle ....even one as hot as the ZL1!

Why not? How would you feel about merchants charging double or triple for water in an emergency? Just because it isn't an emergency or an essential product doesn't mean it isn't price gouging.

Should someone be able to put a cap on how much you ask for a used car you are selling?

The emergency / essential product part does, in fact, make a difference. Now, if you want to talk about being able to buy directly from GM instead of having a middle man, that's another story. But just because GM has a suggested retail price (MSRP) does not mean a dealer is required to sell it at that price. If a dealer is only getting one of a given vehicle and 20 people in the area want to buy it, should they only be allowed to serve the first interested party? Or, if you are selling a house and you have two people wanting to make offers, are you obligated to sell to the person who makes an offer first? Or would you rather wait to see what the second offer is?

I am fully in support of rallying people to avoid dealers that add markups, but making it illegal is taking it way too far.

It is called capitalism and GM is a business, so they can charge whatever they want...especially when dealershipos are individually owned and operated. I agree markups are insane, but fortunately there are tons of dealers around and there are plenty that will sell at MSRP. There is a huge Chevy dealer near me that just won dealer of the year last year and they never sell above MSRP, same goes for the ZL1 with them.
