3500lbs., 230HP, 33MPG, 2.3L Camaro

My 3100 lb S-10 moves along just fine with a 120hp I4. I did some modifications to it, e-fan, CAI, bored throttle body, and it now gets 2mpg better and is a lot more fun to drive. I'm sure a 3500 lb camaro with 230 HP, better aerodynamics, and six gears would be more than enough "fun" to drive for people who want economy... But alas, these same people will probably buy an auto anyway, what fun is that?

how would it be a "nail in the coffin"? the last generation camaro outperformed in most ways and still ended up with all the nails. the performance of a car in comparison to another has very little to do with how well a car sells. after working at a dealership, I can honestly say that 98% of the people that actually buy new cars think your speaking a different language when you even mention the word "horsepower" let alone other performance related terms.

Not a nail in the Ford coffin, and even if it was, I would not be happy, still an American company, and ALOT of American jobs. However, it would be a nice feather in the cap for Chevy and the Camaro! More importantly, as I previously said, I think it would be a great way to get more young buyers into Chevy and the Camaro specifically.

FWIW, the near 3300 lb HHR SS gets 21/29 with the LNF on regular unleaded. I'm sure the Camaro must be a little more aerodynamic than the HHR. Then add the six speed vs. the HHR's 5speed and even the near 3800 lb Camaro LS might benefit. Figure out a way to drop 100-200 lbs and you might have something.

i was just thinking that if a I4 2.3L camaro and a V6 4.0L mustang raced from a light and the camaro won it would be priceless. with bolt ons it could very well take down stock 2 valve 4.6s. it would be just another bragging right for camaro owners.

The HHR SS manual is geared pretty steeply and already needs a 6 speed.
The Camaro would do fine with the 2L Turbo motor which they can easily get 300hp out of factory tune.
There is no reason for 2.3L NA 230hp motor. Turbos are more efficient and have MUCH more low end torque, which is what the Camaro would need.
A 6 speed or 8 speed auto would work very well, as would the 6 speed manual. Just use a deeper 1st gear and a shorter 6th gear so the engine won't lug.

How much less does the 4 cyl engine weigh than the V6? From memory, the V6 weighs just on 320 lbs (160kg). I'm assuming the 4 cyl will cut 100lbs off that... so I don't believe the 'desirable' 3500 lbs target is even attainable for a 4 cyl version.
