You can probably find similar discussions every two or three weeks going back over the past 2-3 years.

But, then we don't argue about which is top dog, Z/28 or SS... not around these parts.
I think two or three weeks is a little long. It is a rare thread that the topic doesn't come up at least once...

Ah, apparently I've been misunderstood. While I did mention the possibility of Z28 being top dog, that was not the topic I was trying to discuss. I've seen the threads you were referring to.

I wanted to discuss the possibility of the Z28 not existing at all.

Re: 5th gen Z28?

I doubt that would happen...too much history, respect, credibility...in that name

I totally agree. I wonder if they felt that Z24/Z26/Z34 were diluting the Z28's credibility, and that's why they dropped the others?

Jake,

Sorry for the misunderstanding, but consider what Scott said.....

"Any Chevrolet can be an SS, but only the Camaro can be a Z/28"

IOW, ask ANYONE what a Z/28 is and they'll know it's a Camaro.....that moniker isn't going anywhere.

Do you know when/where he said that? Was it recent, i.e. in reference to the 5th gen? That would be the first GM person I know of that has said "Z28" in reference to the 5th gen.

There may have been some gloomy days where that might have happened. But way too many of us have an INTENSE passion for the car, the name and the lineage to let that occur now.

Saying that in these parts will get you flamed. Saying it in person in front of some of us will get you bitchslapped.

Doug you are right Z/28 has been always for the camaro only.
SS has been used on about anything GM wanted to put it on
and has not always been put on the car with the most HP or biggest motor.
A good example of this was a 62 chevy Impala you could get a SS model in any v-8 car such as a 327 motor SS or a 409 motor SS. The SS how ever has always supposed to be the best in looks. But Z/28 has been on nothing but a Camaro

Re: 5th gen Z28?

If we get a new Camaro and I still think it will be a big "IF". but I can't imagine GM not having a Z28. Will it be the "top dawg" Camaro everyone here argues about. That remains to be seen. Judging by Chevy's SS brands and the fact they are psuhing that I doubt it.

Personally I don't see the issue and don't see the problem. There were SS Camaro's before Z/28's and that was because Chevy needed to make so many cars for road racing against the Mustang Boss 302. While I agree the Z/28 was a nice all around package. Even in 67-69 the SS with the right options, 396ci 375 hp was certainly a faster car and thus more expensive. That trend continued from 97-02 and I'll bet money it will continue in the 5th gen!

The Camaro SS did not neccessarily come before the Z/28. Sure you can argue that SS #1 was manufactured before Z/28 #1; however the latter was still already planned. In fact Z/28s existed before the SS-396/375hp version did. Furthermore, depending on how you optioned them, a loaded Z/28 could cost more than a low option SS. As far as faster car, again in 1968 the Super Stock world champion in NHRA was a Z/28, NOT an SS-396. I don't give a ratsass what anyone says about the Z/28 having only 290hp... it was closer to 400hp in street trim.

P.S. The SS returned in 1996, not 1997... the primary difference over Z/28 being scoops, stickers and a noisy exhaust. Same engine and same transmissions, so to compare the differences between the 4th gen SS and Z/28 versus their 1st gen counterparts is a bit like comparing apples and rutabagas.

P.P.S. Based upon past postings on the issue by Scott, I would guess that if he has any say on the matter, which trim marque will be "top dog" for Camaro in the future is pretty much a given.

I think everyone on this website knows it's no longer and IF but a WHEN. Will we have a 5th gen in the next 5 years, ABSOLUTELY! Will we have one in 2-3, only Scott and some others know. Count on a decision regarding production dates within the next few months

Re: 5th gen Z28?

Back on topic......the question being posed is with the push toward the SS label being affixed to the "Top Dog" of nearly every Chevrolet model line, and the dilution of the "Z" moniker (some would argue that the SS has been just as diluted) do you believe that the Camaro will use the Z/28 moniker?

The answer seems to be that there is WAY too much brand identification with the Z/28 to the Camaro to NOT use it....why give that away?

I dearly hope that Chevy does NOT use the SS moniker on the Corvette....
