Man, I wanted to put that quote in my sig, but there are new rules about sig lengths and it won't fit.
Edit: Nevermind, I squeezed it in!

I thought they came up with the name then verified that it did not mean anything stange in any language. I never heard they chose it for its meaning in French. That would be a weird name for a car they wanted to have a aggressive image.

It's well documented that GM took it from an old archaic French-to-English dictionary. Some sources claim it means "companion" others say "friend or comrade".
Here's one of the more common explanations:
Here's one of the more common explanations:
As the launch date neared, the car still had no name. It had been called various names by GM, including Nova, Panther, Chaparral, and Wildcat. Chevy also considered using the letters “GM” in the name, and came up with G-Mini, which evolved into GeMini, and finally Gemini. General Motors Headquarters killed that name, because they didn’t want the letters “GM” used in case the car was a failure.
Finally, the car was introduced to the press as the Camaro, considered to be a good name because nobody knew what it meant. Chevrolet produced an old French dictionary showing that the word meant “friend” or “companion”, but Ford found an alternative in a Spanish dictionary – “a small, shrimp-like creature.” The automotive press had a good laugh over that, and an even bigger one when a journalist found yet another meaning- “loose bowels.” It didn’t take long for the laughter to cease after the introduction of the stunning 1967 Chevrolet Camaro!

I have a copy of the actual page in the files from 1966.
Heath's French to English Dictionary -- 1935.
"Friend, Pal, or Comrade."

Anyway, I cringe everytime I see a hillbilly 2nd gen with "CAMERO" painted on the doors in big letters. Dude you OWN one and still can't get the name right.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 4th gen in a commercial with a heartbeat in the background and then having it fade to black and hearing a code blue, "Beeeep....." Then hearing an engine start up and rev to live, a hearbeat beating faster and faster, like a person running. Then the 5th gen appears in full glory. With the announcer saying "With a shot of adrenaline the Heartbeat is Restored!....Camaro the Revolution complete!"

Camaro is back....... Only the shadow remains the same. (Cue hard rock music w/ burnout and highway shot of the shadow running down the highway
The shadow remains the same is one of my favorite old sayings; I never actually saw the commercial, but used to hear about it all the time from one of my friends from CA.
Perhaps Red Planet has insight....
