Claim: production Camaro 12 months away; better than concept
camaro-red.jpg

In the September 25th episode of syndicated automotive radio program Cruise Control Radio, co-host Les Jackson claims to have seen a photo of the production version of the new Chevrolet Camaro. He claims to have spoken with GM engineer Dr. Terry Woychowski on Sunday at a press event, who showed him a photograph of the production car.

"It looks terrific," Jackson said. He claims the photo he saw looked "even better" than the concept vehicle show earlier this year. While this subjective assessment doesn't tell us much, it's safe to assume GM officials really meant it when they said the production car would be nearly identical to the concept.

Jackson also claims Dr. Woychowski told him GM was "in a real rush to get it out the door," and "don't be surprised if it's by this time next year." General Motors has officially stated the new Camaro will go on sale in the first quarter of 2009. Woychowski comments seem to suggest that date could in fact come at least 12 months earlier than expected.

Boy...I don't know about this one...

Interesting, but...

...I just don't know.

I mean it, I really don't know what to think about this one.

Re: Check it...

While I'd be happy if they went on sale BEFORE 2009...I'd be pissed if in "rushing it out the door" they cut any corners or rushed any testing or quality control. If it is going to be a better product, I'll wait until 2009.

But, maybe it's just a marketing ploy...I mean better early than late, so maybe they over-estimated the time they would need hoping to gain much needed GOOD press when they release it early.

Re: Check it...

I read this as well, but I just can't see it coming out that much earlier. I thought they wanted to keep it were it would be like a 40th anniversary or something.

Better double the weekly savings amount

Re: Check it...

There was some discussion...(not with a GM employee however)...at Bowling Green as to the possibility that Oshawa was large enough and possibly could run two different lines for a time..i.e. 1 FWD, 1 RWD....because according to all reports, the Camaro program is ahead of schedule, but it was the plant that would hold it up until laaate 2008 / early 2009.

Some serious speculation going on here though....

Very interesting indeed......but like you stated here, it doesn’t matter how far along the program is until they have a place to actually build it. That would be great if Oshawa could open its doors to Camaro earlier then expected.

I'm with Douglas. I've heard that engineering, not manufacturing capacity, will determine when we see the F5 in showrooms.

I sure wouldn't mind having to choose between a 5th gen convertible and a Z06 18 months from now.

Re: Check it...

I really wish they would get them out early. I am ready to purchase a new car now, however I really want another Camaro. I was debating buying another 69 to hold me over, but I have been down that path before and do not feel like another old car.

Come on GM, hook us up early.

Interesting.

Woychowski is, I believe, chief engineer of trucks though.

Then it would already be out. (The Camaro came out in September 1966 as a 1967 model.)

In today's litagous world, competitive enviroment, you'd have to be nuts to think that anyone is going to rush anything out without any testing. The automotive business just doesn't work that way. Hasn't for years.

As far as the Camaro coming out next year, I know I said that it was coming out before anyone expects and I still say that because (as it now seems to have gotten out.... don't blame me for that) the Camaro is in fact quite farther along than most people imagine.

I also stated that the only chance Camaro had in coming out before the late 2009MY laid in Wilmington, and I gave up on it coming out early ONLY because I believed Oshawa needed to wind up Grand Prix production before it set up for Camaro.

I can realistically see Lacrosse & Grand Prix moving over to Oshawa #1. GM already announced they were cutting Impala production to 250K (down from 300K+ potential). If GM also discontinues the Monte Carlo, that's another 75K+ vacancy.

That's enough to cover the Grand Prix and Lacrosse.

While I'm not quite ready to buy into Camaro production within 12 months, you wouldn't have to try very hard to convince me it could be in production within the first 6 months of 2008 (15-21 months). It would give the GP and the Lacrosse a full year of production before being moved, killed, or replaced, (right in line with plans of the 2 only going to the 2008 model year)

It would also give 4-6 months... or more... to set up a new line, or rennovate that part of the plant.

I didn't mean they would not test the car at all...that would be suicide.
