CONTEST! Guess what these important people are doing and WIN!
#61
EDIT: UNLESSSSSSS, GM is doing some pre-emptive advertising for the Camaro by just throwing out some heritage stuff in a generic sort of way. It's NOT too early to be working on some Super Bowl ads. But to advertise a product you can't sell for a year is not the best use of advertising dollars generally, unless your intent is just to keep up the buzz. SB ads aren't the most cost effective way to do that. The only way that is happening in that picture is if all the others were already there for track testing, and Scott came over w/ some A/V to show them.
Should be interesting!

AND WE HAVE A WINNER.............
There were a couple of reasons we put this contest out there.
Many of you have come up to us over the years and said "hey -- the new Camaro has to SOUND mean ......." --
Well -- I'm here to tell you that we agree!
That said, there is a Federal Noise Driveby Standard that every manufacturer has to meet. ( Exterior Noise Passby ) -- and the law essentially says that we must pass a commonized, repeatable test -- a series of sound measuring devices -- and that under no conditions can the vehicle create -- I'll use the generic 'noise' -- higher than 80db.
Now -- this can also impact tires as well! On many trucks, tire tread specs have had to change because some tread patterns will violate this standard.
Historic Tidbit -- take a look at some 1996 and 1997 Camaros or Firebirds with LT1 engines -- with the Automatic Trans -- note that the PRNDL does not include a first gear -- and the reason is that if you downshifted to first gear-- you would exceed 80db.
Second sticker content does not have to meet same limits as I recall.
There are a lot of engineers in that room -- as well as Tom Peters from Design -- and we were comparing exhaust notes on various entries that are available on the market today -- as well as a few we've got under development. We also listened (previously) to several 'historic' Camaros and Firebirds.
Exhaust notes are interesting -- you want some 'burble' and some "growl' but you don't want 'spitting' or 'whistle' -- and exhaust notes change based on interior noise -- driveby at cruise -- driveby at W.O.T. etc.....so we were also looking at graphs to determine 'sweet spots' and such.....
We want you to be proud of the stock exhaust that we offer on the new Camaro.
And yes, we want to make a Mustang owner green with envy.
(and yes, we know some of you will rip the stock exhaust system off in about 5 seconds and put an SLP loudmouth -- or a chambered -- or perhaps Corsa on your new Camaro.....)
The point? We DO sweat the details. More than you'd ever imagine.
The winner?
Well -- the first guess said something along the lines that we were listening to the LSx based engine. Not true. We were listening to competitor engines -- so JCAMERE94Z28 -- our friend from South Florida wins!
Jonathan -- send me your mailing address along with a telephone number -- and when I return to Detroit next week, I'll get that poster out to you!
Oh -- and for those of you who thought we were looking at commercials? We're not working on that as of yet.

Darn, I didn't guess right PLUS Scott posted before I did... might as well edit what I said...
As far as exhaust goes. Here's my opinion! The current Mustang GT sounds nice, but I'm not fond of popping sounds. The LT1 sounds great at idle, but puny when accelerating. The LS1 was nice, but kind of monotone.
My 2 cents... make it sound more like this!

(yeah yeah, V12 compared to V8, carbureted blah blah blah, just a suggestion )

Thanks for clearing that up RP. I for one have always loved the sounds of the Cobra DOHC 4.6 as the best from the factory. Great deep throaty tone. My friends '97 Cobra always sounded great until I couldn't hear him anymore past 2nd gear. ..

And I was going to guess it was a "go fast" meeting and everyone was listening to the Wright's singing the ol' Milsap song "She Loves My Car"...

I have known for years about the drive by noise rules from working with tire engineers on OE tires. They hated them!. It is a shame how it compromises intakes and other tuning aides.
What I would like to know loop hole for the Z06 bypass muffler. I Have wondered how they have bypassed the rules.
I would like to see this muffler as an option on the Camaro SS and Z28.
I had heard the Single tail pipe SS was done away with due to noise. If true that was a shame as that was a easy 7 HP by going to a flow through muffler. At least Flowmaster sill offers a similar set up good for 10 HP.

How about an honorable mention? I know I wasen't the first to mention the exhaust fine tuning obvisiously, but I did mention the comparing of current offerings exhaust notes on the market and how the Camaro team is prob fine tuning that note of the exhaust to fit into the not so overly loud yet not humble tone. Thanks Scott and the entire Camaro team I cannot wait until this car hits the street.

What if there was an understanding. Between an aftermarket company and GM, where GM could pay a few employees of this company to be "GM Certified" or something and have that company pay GM to use GM's resources while GM pays them to install exhaust (or whatever aftermarket part)?
So that you have some guy on the assembly line who's job is to install this aftermarket part.
Would that be a feasible loophole?
