Yeah, I'd rather have a real trunk spring, but cost and weight factor in here too.

Great pictures!

I believe the trunk opening will need to be bigger. Need to make it so we don't have those huge hinges impinging on interior space too! Maybe some hydrualic struts. Also need to make accomidations for lower lift over.

White interior looks good!!

What about a "liftback." I had a 1989 Plymouth Sundance in high school (no laughter, please) and my early college years and while it looked like a true coupe, when you opened the trunk, the whole back window went up with the trunklid, giving you a hatchback sized opening without an actual hatchback. The picture of the Camaro trunk above looks like that could actually be possible.

Two possible choices.. it's a concept that wasn't complete yet (they just didn't have them on the car) or it could be that the trunk is actually kept open by a metal spring... just as they were in the 60's.

I'd prefer the sprung approach. The struts never wear out and don't have trouble opening on cool days. I always hated that about the 3rd and 4th gens.

My 02 doesn't like using the automatic release, even after a replacement spring... My third gens just hated holding the hatch up regardless of the temp.
The springs are cheaper, so go with the springs, file any complaints about struts under "Nobody Cares" and then spend the money on the motor.

I had the same model...'89 Sundace w/ Turbo 2.5. Fun car! Personally, I like a hatch.

I really don't think we'll see anything but a trunk though. The folks who know say it's not going to happen. A trunk lends itself to structural rigidity and is lighter...probably less expensive as well. I just hope the opeining is bigger than the previous mustang. Fold down rear seats are needed as well.

Anybody have access to that site for the hi-res versions of those images?

And on springs vs. struts, I want struts. If Honda can afford to put them on the Civic, Chevy can put them on the Camaro. The springs waste trunk space, and most importantly, make it harder for me to integrate a nice stereo installation.

Pacer that seems a little one sided. One of the reasons that GM's car lineup was in the shape it was in was because of arguments like that. Put struts on the trunk lid, they take up less trunk space, probably weigh less, and likely cost the same.

We can't let this be a "motor in a box" again it was a major reason the 4th gen died.

Re: Creation of the Camaro Concept

Even the trunk supports are retro. But really:

I like the 3rd/1st Gen mixed steering wheel, but does anyone else notice just how IROC-Z that bumper would be without the round lights and if that grill didn't go all the way across? Look at how the lower grill on the driver side is angled up like an IROC also and how the passenger is angled down, (more like the GTO) which is what made it to the concept we saw though. Doing that to the grill would make for a nice bumper change on certain models.
