My face ..... since we were at a dead stop, wasn't like we were going very "fast", but obviously the sudden "acceleration" forward (Yukon Denalis pack quite a punch!! ) made the car "think" we were going fast?? But I was wearing my seat-belt, which would have been perfectly effective on its own in that situation. You wouldn't believe how much the airbag stings your face when it blows up at you like that. It took the better part of an hour for the tingling sensation to go away, and for the swelling in my lip (surprised it didn't cut) to go away. And the SMELL . OMG .

I however, am NOT on the band-wagon to say delete airbags. In case that accident was much worse, I'd hope the bag would help keep me alive .

Not quite.

The accelerometers that are in the front of your car are designed to detect a sudden negative acceleration (also known by the slang word "deceleration") with significant delta-V (change in velocity), and will not fire on a sudden acceleration like getting rear-ended. It probably was the subsequent negative delta-V (change in velocity) of slamming into the car in front of you that set off the bags.

How does an airbag help you if you are wearing a seatbelt? The seatbelt holds you in place. An airbag is useless unless you are wearing a seatbelt.

I get that. Basically I meant that we got moving "fast enough" that it was an abrupt enough "halt" to fire off the bags. But because it was only a few feet, it seems almost stupid.

Have you seen crash test dummy videos? (not the band). Looks like your body still gets thrashed around pretty severely even with belts on. The airbag is to keep your upper body from going beyond the restraint of the seatbelt into the dash/windshield/steering wheel/etc.

Persoannly I think the side impact airbags are more useful. Not much room btween your head and the side of the car. Getting t-boned from the side are some of the worst crashes for injuries. I still wouldnt get them in my car and just take my chances.

Totally unecessary. Of all the wrecks that are avoidable this is the 2nd easiest one besides head on

Ok, so people should just "look out" and stop crashing, and we wouldn't need any air-bags or seat-belts, right??

But what do we do about the people who DON'T avoid these "easy to avoid" wrecks?? Or is that just good population control??

bull****. when your driving along and someone comes flying out of no where (parking lot, side street, threw a red light where there's a building on the corner etc.) you can't always avoid them. if you can then maybe you shoudl share your secret since you know all.

How do you figure that? If wrecks were avoidable we wouldnt have so many of them.

Re: Dont forget the AIRBAGS!!!

The Camaro WILL have airbags in the steering wheel and dash. For those that dont want them, unplug them and hopefully a drunk driver doesnt decide to find your front end while going 70 mph toward you

I imagine it will also have side curtains as well. With all the idiotic drivers out there (and Florida has LOADS OF THEM) I'm all for it

You may be the worlds best driver, but there are other people on the road with you that will run red lights, stop signs etc. You don't have to be at fault to be T-boned. Chances are, they will survive and you will die, because that's how it seems to play out.

I never used to think much about airbags, and maybe I'm just getting old I don't know (25 ), but they are important to me now.

I strongly disagree.

I probally need less than one hand the items I disagree with with that agency. But I'd probally number into the hundred the number of things I 1000% agree with. I seriously doubt there's anyone here that would want to return to 1950s automobile standards.

I disagree on the airbags. Just like in our healthcare industry we deal with things after they occur and not before in a preventitive manner.
Again, I gotta disagree 1001%. steering wheel and passenger airbags are the best mandated safety devices since the collapsible steering column and safety glass. 15 years ago, I might have agreed with you, and had the same attitude about them. But I don't think there's anyone on this board who doesn't know someone who was saved from serious injury or worse by these things. After coming within a whisker of being T-boned by a couple of yahoos running a red light (at high speed) a couple of years ago, I'm a convert to higher side impact standards and (gasp) side air bags as well.

I trust my driving. I have NEVER (knock on wood, and throw salt over my shoulder) had an at fault accident in my 20+ years of driving. But I've been rearended 5 times, sideswiped twice, had a SUV wipe out about 75 feet in front of me, had a minivan flip over in the next lane, barely missing me, had truck tires blow out next to me on the freeway twice, had dozens of near misses due to other bozos bad driving, and even had a tree crash in front of me. I'd be an utter moron to think that as long as I'm a great driver, I'd never get injured or seriously hurt in an accident.

Sooner or later, I'm likely going to wind up using one of those NHTSA mandated safety items.

Odds are very high that you will too.

Re: Dont forget the AIRBAGS!!!

I know more peole whom have had accidents were the airbag basically blew up in their face and did nothing, except cost a ton of money to replace. Seat belts save lives not airbags. Steering wheel and dashboard airbags may prevent some injuries but are not a life saver on their own. I actually think a side impact airbag could be a lifesaver, especially for head injuries.
I just wish all airbags were optional. I would rather have a cheaper car and not get aitbags. And for all you guys that want them, you can pay for them as an option.

Re: Dont forget the AIRBAGS!!!

Um, wow. Just wow.

It seems the mulletoids in the trailer park are getting restless.

So let's remove the airbags.

Maybe all the 5th gens should come in primer gray, except for the front left fendor... that can be the color of the buyer's choice. Also, replace one wheel with a one-size too small hub-capped wheel from an '89 Firebird. Would that make you guys happy?
