Like I said before airbags dont save lives seat belts do. One of my best friends was involved in a head on colision. Both cars were doing 60 mph. He was wearing his seatbelt and his mini truck was not equipped with an airbag. They hit so hard he split the other car(70's Ford LTD) in half. My friend walked away with a broken nose,black eye and 2 broken ribs, plus he was sore as all hell. One person in the other car died and the driver survived. The other guys were drunk. The guy who died was not wearing a seatbelt. I guess the point I am trying to make is airbags are not the wonder safety itemn evryone thinks they are. My buddy ended up with a broken nose without an airbag. and from what I have heard airbags break noses all the time. Sounds like an even deal with or without the bags.

 

It's funny - you rarely if ever hear these debates elsewhere in the world. Every other civilised country has seat belt laws tight enough that the car manus can set their airbags for belted occupants. That means no 10mph inflations, or stupid high velocity bags.

 

Re-read post #16 in case you missed it . I have been hit in the face with an airbag, and yeah, it hurt like hell for awhile, BUT, I think it's a small trade-off for far worse potential injuries .

And a friend of mine in school got in a head-on collision ... Sunfire crossed the center line at his newer Dodge Dakota, his truck went up over the front of the car and sent him into the ditch on his side I believe. Anyway the girl driving the car was in very bad shape (she survived, however) and all he suffered was some pretty bad bruising all over his chest from the airbag . I'll take a few bruises before broken bones or potentially worse, thanks .

I realize though, that every situation is different. I agree 100% that SEAT-BELTS save lives, but working together, I think seat-belts AND airbags can help even more, and help reduce the number and degree of injuries.

 

I didnt want to start an airbag debate with this thread, guys. The new car is getting an airbag. It's a done deal. As for you, Too Z Max, your buddy survived because of a seat belt. A single crash is no way to judge the effectiveness of a safety system. It's been scientifically proven that air bags help keep people alive.

Decromin, yeah, no one else in the world debates it I guess, because of tight seat belt laws. Personally, I'd rather put up with more debate if it means less laws. There is a natural consequence to safety legislation: It allows people the chance to excercise less common sense and get away with it. Common sense atrophies, and eventually turns into uncommon sense.

The use of seat belts and airbags make common sense! I dont need a law to tell me that. Too bad there's so many people running around who need a law as a crutch to force them into doing the sensical thing, eh?

Well, enough of that.

I LOVE this debate - and this story is the best example of why: people who don't like airbags, and some that do, base their opinion on a single incident - a friend of a friend, etc. But y'know what? Technology isn't perfect! There will ALWAYS be cases in which something doesn't help when it should. Airbags may cause more injuries (especially burns and such) in some situations, but it's SO big an improvement in other areas that it's worth the trade off. I just can't even believe that this debate is STILL going on!!

 

Why Floss? Brushing does most of the work anyway?

 

Here's something I just thought of . Have airbags / technology improved a lot in the last ~10 years?? I mean, looking at those pictures shown before, seems they're getting better at "packaging" them ... have they also improved the bags??

See, the car I was in was a 1996 Sunfire ... would a bag in a ~2006 car be easier on a person than one that's ~10 years old?? And if this is something that they're continually trying to improve upon, than can we expect a better system by ~2009??

Nope not just one incedent, that is just 1 example that I know of personally. I rolled an RX7 end over end, did airbags help here? nope. I was rearended by a big *** caddy in the same car, did they help here? nope I rearend a lady who stopped for a green light in my SS, hit her very hard, enough so that I had skid marks going across my nice SS hood from the back tires of her car, the bags didnt go off, which was a good thing if you ask me. I can go on and on with accidents in which frontal airbags dont do a thing. I am guessing in most accidents they will not do anything. You get Tboned, rearend or in a rollover, they dont do anything. This is just my opinion and for me the odds are in my favor I would never need them, thats why I would rather not pay for them.
As far as the rest of the world is concerned, especially Europe, I think they are just more responsible for their actions and are better drivers then in America.

 

Please shut this thread down. This is like debating whether it's better to wear Kevlar when getting shot at or hope the other guy is a bad shot. Unreal! Let's stop this now!

How about I also try to put it into a perspective...

Imagine someone telling you to get into one of two cars. Both cars have seatbelt systems and are identical, except that only one has has an airbag system. Then they tell you that after you get into one of the cars, they will propel it at 60mph into a tree with a trunk 3 feet wide. Which car would you pick? The one with the airbag or the one without?

 

ha ha ha ! Try driving in Spain or Italy some time!

Just remember, EU is where they are forcing auto manufacturers to build stringent pedestrian safety features into their cars. I guess too many Europeans were walking into incoming traffic... Probably while clicking the autostart button on the key fob for their parked BMW.

 

I have had two accident and both times the air bags didn’t deploy. I still take an airbag in my car. I rather look like I got hit in the face with a frying pan then be paralyzed. Which being paralyzed to me is worse then death.
