F-Body?

So I haven't seen anything official and I know most of us are assuming the fact, but has anyone heard anything about the designation of the car being and F-body or not? I mean we all assume that because it is a Camaro it would have to be, but if the platform is gonna be shared by other cars wouldn't they have to be designated F-bodies also? Just my thought for the day

Re: F-Body?

Nope, GM has moved away from the letters for their platforms. Now they have names like zeta, epsilon, sigma, yadda, blah. So we are going to have a 5th gen Camaro, but no 5th gen f-body.

Re: F-Body?

That would have been a great question for the Q+A with Scott. Mabey he might be able to address it here after the fact.

Re: F-Body?

There still has to be a VIN code letter, and my guess is it will still be "F".

Still using letters of the alphabet, just Greek ones. The VIN code might be F, though.

Hey, it might be a phi-body!

Re: F-Body?

Wonder if they'd instead call it a Z-body??? (do those exist already?? ) but then what would seperate the Camaro from the GTO or the Cadillac or the G8 or the Lucerne???

4th digit should remain F as it was .

I believe this is probably going to be the case as well. My money is on the enthusiasts still calling the 5th gen an fbody, even if only for this reason. The term has been around for quite a long time.

Re: F-Body?

The F-car naming convention has become synonymous with the Camaro/Firebird. I don't see that changing among the enthusiast crowd.

Re: F-Body?

If it ends up going by some other designation then there are probably a couple hundred F-body clubs out there that will have to consider re-naming themselves.

Or instead of completely renaming, they could just include the new designation as well. Let's say they refer to it as the "Z" body, for Zeta.

Well, the club could then be the F or Z-body club. In short, the "F 'er Z" club. Get it, the "effers" club?!?! Ha, ha, ha!!

Keep in mind that the Camaro/Firebird chassis has in the past, always been a unique chassis... that is to say that the chassis was never shared with any other vehicle in GM's lineup.
The Corvette was in the same boat with the Y-body being a unique chassis... up until a couple of years ago when the XLR came online, being built in the same plant and sharing the same chassis as the 'Vette.
The 5th Gen Camaro will definitely be sharing its chassis with a bunch of other vehicles... I wonder if that Zeta chassis will be given the "F" designation... for the sake of continuing the tradition!! It's a cinch that the "F" designation is currently vacant!!

Best regardSS,

Elie
