Future Camaro Paint Issues?

I've read numerous complaints on "thin paint" from NBS 07+ Silverado owners (and some 06 and 07 classic owners). They say in certain sunlight you can see primer through the paint. There have been several on GM-trucks.com that say GM bought their truck back because of the condition. I've personally seen the "thin paint" issues in the wheelwells of several 07+ silverado's sitting on dealer lots

What is GM doing to remedy this situation? I don't want to drop 30K? on a new Camaro and realize a week later the paint sucks.

I think we all remember the GM paint jobs of the early 90's.

When it comes to vehicles I'm a "keeper." I had an 86 toyota truck I owned for 8 years, I've had a 58 apache for 11 years, my 67 for 10, and my Silverado for 3. I don't want to regret my purchase. Many of the owners have said you don't notice the paint defect at first, but in certain lighting.

I know I'll get the "don't worry, GM will fix it by then" line, but I know we have some GM people on here and just expressing my concern!

Thanks

Sorry, couldn't resist - I agree, 30 Grand for a car and the paint sucks? It better not, i'd get rid of the car and order/buy another one. I'm a keeper, too - the paint if properly taken care of should last for years.

and for years I have noticed this - certain paint colors on cars seem to just fade right off...silver, charcoal metallic.....maroon metallics.......is it a combination of the sun searing it and NO wax, ie: NOT taken care of.
People are pigs with their stuff, I can't stand it when people don't take care of their 2nd costliest investment - Thanks for Listening

if that's the case then 99.9% of new cars are in trouble. Seems like EVERY friggin car sold now is either Silver or "Blah" (pewterish, metalic tan)

Out of all the six Chevy/GMC trucks I've had since 1985 (and I keep them way beyond 200k miles) I've had one which faded horribly (two tone silver/grey metallic that I still have), one blah tan colored one that still has decent paint, a black one that still looked good when sold (217k miles), and three bright red ones that all looked great (one sold at 256k miles, one totaled at 231k miles, and one I still have). I have noticed paint issues in all makes with metallics, but I have not noticed issues with GM paint like I see on Chrysler products ("orange peel" sitting in a line on the dealers lot. Most of the GMs I've had since 1967 have had excellent paint. Either GM had some problems for a while when I did not buy vehicles, or it was an intermittent issue that did not affect many vehicles (at least to my knowledge). Either I've just been very lucky or GM paint is OK.

In the early 90's the EPA cracked down on the chemicals used in paints and in the early 90's A LOT if mfg's had trouble with the new types of paints (different chemical make-up).

It's back again, I can't remember if it was last year or 05, but the EPA came up with more paint rules and again, the types of paints being used are different. Some are almost "soft."

On the trucks I've seen with the issue, it appears the factory (paint robots???) are actually "missing" or only "skimming" certain areas.

So I'm not sure if it's a paint issue, or production issue.

I just hope GM is fully aware of it

Everyone who paints know the problems with the solvents in the new paints and the problems they pose. Even the spray paint and cleaners you use at home are effected and in many cases not as good as they used to be.

The bugs will get worked out and we also will see a lot of new technology in newer paints that are not too far off. Many are playing with things like healing paint that repairs it's self and other features of imporved paint.

I am sure the Camaro will be fine and we should see some striking colors. Just look at the many bright colors already now being used by Holden that some are going to find their way to the States in the new G8.

I think this brings up a couple of good points..
1) Paint that flakes off in 6 or 7 years won't help GM's image.
(My '90 IROC Quasar Blue peeled, my '95 PA Bright white peeled, my '88 Suburban Dark Blue stripe peeled...)

2) Nothing will kill the Camaro faster than having it blend into the masses of sedans and SUV's by sharing boring, practical, nearly invisible colors.

(Think IROC's of the '80's, bold metallic's, then....Some modern remakes of classic colors using new processes would compliment the "Heritage" theme well IMO...)

All I'm Saying Is...

...Give Buyers Some Color Choices

All my old 60's & 70's Color Chips are packed away, I found these on the web at:

http://www.camaros.net/

Left side, down a bit under Tech -

Paint Codes

These are some colors - these are color choices!
I am not an expert on 21 Century painting techniques but like I always say, they can send a man to the moon.............

Give GM buyers dome decent color choices......keep the interior colors to a minimum. (Black, Camel or Lt. Brown, RED, Gray) I'd buy a Butternut or Bright Yellow Camaro with a red vinyl interior in a heartbeat. or any color with a BLACK interior. Talk about heritage, a gold metallic Camaro with a black interior? Or Lemans Blue or Vedoro Green or Copper with a black interior? Grecian Green with a Black or Gray Interior??
Now those were some stand out cars back in the day. Heck, I had a 1972 Chevelle Convt. for years that was Bright Blue Metallic with a black vinyl interior/black top. Simple, always, ALWAYS turned heads.

I know the times dictate colors, blah...blah...blah...yada...yada... so they say (yeah, whatever...) I guess we're in some pretty bleak times if the dang car colors are any reflection of that.
I remember this 1981 Z-28 LOADED that was sold, sitting inside the prep. area of my dads Chevy dealer. It was Bright Red with a SILVER interior - man was that car sharp looking.

Well, I've been reading these posts for a few months now and have definitely gotten revved up about the new Camaro, thanks to all of you folks. I can't believe the enthusiasm here....hangin' on every tidbit of info. - It has really made me happy to see all the excited people here.

This post about colors made me think of all the boring looking cars out there, stepping outside at work to see the bland masses parked along the streets of DC, bring back some color choices, GM, please!

The 2010 Camaro will be a Waterborne basecoat. It is a mandatory switch that is coming in about 3 years. It is already being used in many places so there shouldn't be many "bugs".

If the car is made in Canada, wtf does the EPA have to do with ANYTHING reguarding the paint?
Third gens had problems because in the late 90's, the VN plant had to use waterbased colors.

Canadians like Beer and the envirolment.

Have you not noticed it is much cleaner north of the boarder? They even pick up the Beer cans and throw them away.

All kidding aside they have laws there too they are not a lot different than us. They are not like China where anything goes.

I know, but the EPA has nothing to do with the Camaro made in Canada. Maybe someone could pull up paint quality standards for Canada, find out what type of paint will they be using?

My Maxx's paint, while some spots have orange peel, none of it fades, chips or anything bad. I havent washed/waxed it in...a while...and it still looks good.

Waterborne used to be awful but they have perfected it and it is coming back, I would bet Canada is already using it.
