Good point. I was comparing magazine review numbers for the G8 with manufacturer numbers for the Camaro.
The magazine tests have said that G8 GT actually weighs about 4100 lbs, not the 3995 that GM claims. This is probably due to optional equipment, but I don't know. We'll have to wait and see what Camaro SS weighs in the real world.
Nonetheless, Camaro is both lighter and more powerful, which gives me very high hopes for the driving experience.

Going just by mfr numbers, the best comparison is G8 GXP to Camaro SS. There is 190 pounds difference between the M6 version of those.
It stands to reason that an L76 Camaro with 18" wheels, smaller brakes and other changes to make it less track capable/durable (but lighter) while still being perfectly capable on the street could probably come in pretty close to 3800, and perhaps under that for an M6 model, without much trouble. The question is whether those who are loudest about weight would want those sorts of changes.
When the VE Commodores were released, Wheels and Motor wasted no time taking them to a track. As I recall, they complained that the brakes faded too quickly and asked for better ones. The HSV got them and more (and another 50-100 pounds).
It looks like Camaro has the big brakes, and Scott mentioned that he wanted to make sure the differential was stronger than the 4th gen's. Maybe that means less torque management?

Judging from Scott's comments I'm thinking that the Z28 will surprise people with both its lighter weight AND the added cost to go along with it.

Yup! Pretty much!
Correct me if I'm wrong --but I posted that and I don't recall that many people disagreed.......
The bottom line is that this car has to appeal to a wider audience -- and dear friends -- the number of people that are upset about the weight (in terms of performance) is negligible in the grand scheme of things -- and the sad part? They have judged without driving. (not all -- but some have..)
At some point, decisions have to be made.......and dear GOD let me say it one more time: we don't like weight either -- ESPECIALLY with new CAFE laws that we're facing -- but we still have to make a quality car and take care of the issues that people had with the 4th gen..............
I'm sorry - but people really need to see the reality here -- YES - we could get it down to 3500 pounds - but that means cutting corners (quality) or using exotic materials ($$$$$$$$)

I want the camaro to be at around 3500lbs which was more or less the weight of the 4th gen LT1.
The first thing i'll do with my maro is add a cam in it and loose the warranty and get 450-500rwhp on it. When I pass by MANY of the cars around here I will start selling the camaro the same way my father sold many z06s here. When I open up the hood and say... NO NOS no S/C No turbos no VP and no nonesense i'll be able to do that... but with 3900lbs on my back... boy oh boy is it going to be tough with the good civics that are here pumping 400whp.
That is the point on the new camaro and doing it with an old one is not quite as much fun as doing it with a new one.
I own a dyno and believe me there are plenty good cars here that will want to race a maro v8. Starting with the supped up 350z's and what not... weight for me is an issue. So if the corners could be cut on the z28 I would love to know so I can hold myself off for one.
I know i might be in the .1% of the people to buy a camaro and hence why I would want a z28 and not an ss. I don't care that much of road noise and the vette is pretty loud and SUPER acceptable. I don't mind it being a little louder being the car is cheaper than the z06.

What would you compare it to?
The SRT vehicles? The GT500?
While I am a little dissappointed with the weight, its only a minor setback IMO my 5th gen will have an LS3, manual 6speed and some kind of FI eventually. The car has many other great features besides the powerttrain. Im sorry that some of you arent pleased. But there is always Mustangs, various Dodges, hell go pick up a used 4th gen or Vette.
The LS2 GTOs ran pretty well, and they are a bit heavier with less HP. That somthing to think about.

I mean.. my camaro with 607 to the wheels and 4 people in the car moved LIKE CRAP! compared to myself alone. My point is... the car will not be stock for a long time, so power is not an issue, i am extremely happy with the ls3, but weight will be... now.. if they throw in a regular production 7L producing 475HP and the same 3860lbs... i'd consider it.
