To answer the poll, I'd buy a 4,000 lb. Camaro, and do some weight reduction.

 

Oh man, if it were only that easy.....

I'll tell you guys, a quarter ton difference is so huge, so insurmountable, I just couldn't imagine the heavier car being more satisfying to drive.

 

It shouldn't be too hard. Remove the rear seats and associated hardware, replace the hood and trunk with fiberglass or carbon fiber, lighter aftermarket wheels, etc. It might not be a quarter ton, but you could remove a couple hundred pounds if you wanted. 3800 lbs. is better than 4000.

 

Whoa, hold on a second. Weren't you saying a while back, how much you admire the CTS-V interior? Maybe that's the car for you....

But see, that's the problem with this poll. We don't yet know what all is in your theoretical 4000 lb Camaro. People could make a lot more informed decision if they knew all the equipment and features that will be in the new Camaro... which we do not yet know. So this lack of facts really distorts the accuracy and validity of the survey.

As for weight reduction. There are a lot of ways to impact that. Remove back seats... spare tires... change out the hood for 'glas... etc.

You know, my personal preference on the Z/28 would be to just use a hotly tuned, NA version of the Gen V smallblock, and take all that cost and effort saved from a SC's engine - and put it ALL towards weight reduction for that particular model.

To me the average consumer, Yes becuase we could care less about the history of "what" a camaro is. The only thing that matters right now is THIS is the 2010 camaro. The Style, Small block V8, and Price are what is going to sell it not what was done the last 4 generations of a "name". No regular consumer is going to compare this to any other camaro, its going to get compared to the mustang and challenger because thats what you can buy new at this time.

 

It's at the upper end of the scale (pun intended), but yes, it would still be a Camaro.

 

Would it still be a Camaro? Yes. Would it be a Camaro I would buy? No, most likely not. For that weight, I might as well have the larger Challenger.

 

I'm thinking along the same lines with the G8. For right around 4000#s, you get a relatively roomy sedan with great performance. Would it be up to snuff performance-wise with a supercharged V8 Camaro of the same heft? No, but at that point I might as well carry 5 people while I go fast....
