Re: How bad are the markups going to be?

I bought my Z in 93, when they first came out. I had to pay MSRP and I thought that was bad. Add to that the first year bugs that all new models have, I vowed never to buy a first year model again. So if I can restrain myself I'll be getting a second year 5th gen.

If there are markups I won't be buying one. Why pay thousands over sticker? Think of what the car will be worth a few years later? The financial hit won't be worth it. I would be better off buying a '69.

And isn't the Mustang due for minor revisions in a couple years? I would also bet that the Challenger makes it to the market before the Camaro. With that kind of competition I would think dealer markups are the last thing GM needs if they want to capture market share.

Hmmmm.....

It appeals to both sexes.
It's going to likely be the flashiest thing in the Chevy showroom.
It's going to have a modest sticker.
It has a historic name.
It's would have had a 7 year absence.
And it's likely to be GM's biggest story over the next 2 years.
GM has been seemingly less able to control gouging on their cars than Ford or Chrysler.

How bad will the markups likely be?

I'd say don't come within a mile of a Chevy dealer without a vat of KY for the 1st year or 2.

I just don't think an 8oz jar of Vasoline is going to cut it this round.

it really is a shame. I'm sure there has to be a dealer in the country that won't be marking them up, and I'll give them my business. I don't mind flying out and driving it home, good time to bond with the vehicle and save some cash as well.

I would be more then happy to go to another dealer with in a certain radius of where I live, to buy one. I have no problem paying MSRP, but I will not buy if this car is gouged like the Mustang GT was.

don't buy the first year if you don't want huge markups

besides, the first model year of almost any car from almost any car maker sucks.

Now would be a good time to create some friendships at your local Chevy dealer.

Hope that markups don't ruin the car's first year of introduction.
Greedy dealers suck.

As with any highly anticipated model, markups will be dictated by how much interest dealers are seeing from buyers.
It's kind of ironic...show up with cash in your hand for a deposit and you'll fuel the dealer's greed for subsequent buyers.

Re: How bad are the markups going to be?

I'm going to try hard to stick to my guns and not buy one in the first year. Also, there's a Chevy dealership right across the street from where I work, I can see their entire front lot out my back window. If/when I see 5th gen there, I will be going over there camera in-hand. I will take pics of any/all 5th gens and their sticker prices. Then I'll check the one 1 block from where I live and do the same. It will be interesting indeed.

And I still say there will be a dealership that has a 5th gen and Corvette on the same lot, with the 5th gen having the higher price tag. This will happen, and maybe I'll be the one to capture it.

I didn't hear that many horror stories about the new mustangs being marked up. True enough most that I saw for the first month were V6s but ford seemed to get production up pretty quickly. I'm sure this is over simplifying but that seems to be the way to stop gouging. Whos gonna pay thousands over if there are more than enough to go around from the start. Kinda hard to talk about how rare a car is if you've got ten on the lot.

Re: How bad are the markups going to be?

Something just occured to me today on the drive home, so now I must ask and maybe somebody here can help out with this one...

Question:
If GM can have a "red tag" sale or employee pricing sale, that almost every dealer falls inline with, how come they can't mandate (or uber-highly suggest, beyond just msrp) the selling price of a vehicle thats not on sale to avoid B.S. markups and "market adjustments" ?

I can wait, I've waited this long, I want a vert anyway so I wont be buying for a year or so after the initial launch, I'll deal with the dealership left and right, but I wont pay more the MSRP.

It's a very fine line to walk. The employee pricing promotion was voluntary for the dealers. If they chose to sell just one car at the employee price, they had to agree to sell them all at the employee price. Or, they could opt out of the program altogether and hope for the best. Not really much of a choice when it comes down to it. This was basically acceptable as a short term promotion, but if GM tried to use it as a long term strategy, I'm pretty sure the government would step in because manufacturers are not allowed to dictate retail prices to their distributors.

It would be interesting to see GM do this again when the F5 is introduced, but remember with last summer's promotion they excluded cars like the Corvette and GTO. Cars in relatively short supply obviously don't need a lot of cash on the hood, and you could see why GM would want to get the maximum profit out of their hot cars. Same would hold true for the F5, unless GM really wanted to make a statement to their dealers.

Re: How bad are the markups going to be?

We just need a Pal here on the boards that works at a Chevy dealer! JUst imagine if he'd offer to CZ28.com to sell at MSRP and everybody else is marking them up... The business he would get from these boards online would definitely make up any money lost from "the markup."

Jason, quit that Pontiac dealer and go to a Chevy!

Now, I've heard the next GTO will be alot hotter looking though. I think things are going to start looking really good in GM's Stable.

*Imagines picture...

Center: Corvette Z06
Right: Camaro Z28
