Not true.

If you go by official ratings, the Z/28's 1971 LT-1 out powered the Camaro SS's hairiest big block by 30 hp.

Also, I hope you're not taking the 1st gen's 302 rating literally. The 290/290 rating is exactly the same as what Ford rated the Boss 302 at, which BTW was exactly what Mopar rated the the 340 six pack at in the Challenger T/A and 'Cuda AAR. IOW, it was an inside joke.

It is generally agreed that no Z/28 302 left the factory with less than 350 hp. Add optional crossram intake, dual Holleys, headers and matching cam and you were over 400.

I used to have a Camaro SS350. Nice enough car - but good Lord - not even in the same league as a Z/28.

One year. That was when GM was on the way to phasing that engine out and having to deal with lowering compression ratios due to emissions. If anything, they probably just had to leave that in as a stop gap until they phased SS out. Look at the power before hand, it was rated in 1970 as having 375 hp before they dropped compression.

I recall watching a R&T classic or something. They said it was a 14.95 or something on old style tires.

That engine wasn't made with quarter mile in mind, it was made for the track. The S2000 feels like an impressive car and does excellent on the track, but it's a slow car. Comparing the 302 to the big block is apples and oranges though, they both had seperate missions in mind, with different powerbands.

Like Z/28lover, I fully agree that the Z28 is coming back, but it makes no sense, historically, to make it the top dog. If you want to change things up and call it that now, then ok, but you can't go back and say that it has always been that way.

Wow....here we go again -- this site has had this argument -- since -- lemme see -- since Moses docked the Ark.........

............

OK.....listen up people! and by the way -- I'm not lecturing - -while I sometimes shake my head -- or bash it against the wall -- I DO realize that threads like this happen for one reason............................

PASSION

(notice I didn't do a cheap shot and type paSSion!)

You all have great passion for these great cars.

Now to that "listen up" part.........

If you haven't figured out by now that the Camaro team 'gets' what a Camaro is -- well - you haven't been paying attention.

That's also why we have a Camaro Summit coming up in May when 15 Camaro/Firebird enthusiasts will be coming to the Milford Proving Grounds to talk to us about all things Camaro.

You can be ASSURED that we understand the importance of the Camaro monikers......

(and you are correct -- SS can be any Chevy -- or my initials -- but only CAMARO can be a Z28)

TRUST me.

Please.

(too many of you know where I live...)

Well then. There you have it. Again.

Thanks for keeping it real Scott, as usual.

As much as I love these threads - (I'm not freaking kidding, I love 'em ), I think 1fastdog was so eloquent on the subject, there's not much more to say.

Except this: notwithstanding that TV show you watched, it would take the top 375 hp version, just to keep up with a properly driven Z/28 in a straight line . Put them both on a road course and the Z/28 would look like it was clubbing baby seals.

Either way, Scott's word is where the buck stops so you guys have nothing to worry about.

The one concern I have is that no one should feel "slighted" about THEIR new Camaro, whether it be a sporty 6 powered one or whatever engine it has or what additional designation it might wear.

It WILL be the best Camaro yet and "miles of smiles" will be in store. No doubt in my mind whatsoever.

Those that know me will avow I don't say such a thing lightly or in passing.

I've spent a lot of time with the Camaro concept cars and each is even better than the previous.

I wish every Camaro fan could spend just 10 minutes on a turntable with one of them an enjoy the folks viewng it. Seeing the wonder and excitement in the faces of the crowds is truly a treat. It's a real highlight for a car person like me. It would make agreat TV ad to simply show the facial expressions the new Camaro evokes on those viewing it.

Scott is dead on about the PASSION statement.

Now Scott, I realize your initials ARE SS, but isn't your middle name Z/28 ??

I think the Z28 name will be back, and the SS will bow down to it

This site makes it so tempting to wait for a Z-28 to come out.....but I can't resist the temptation to use my position as #4 on my local dealer list for whatever Camaro ragtop comes out at the intro....
But thanks for giving me more to dream about Scott. Again...sometimes dreaming about this introduction is more fun than the event itself once it starts. I guess I can survive with a 430 HP normally aspirated V-8, although I sure would prefer the sound of a blower under the hood.......
