Speed World Challenge is cool, but for me, nothing even remotely compares to the original Trans Am series. Nothing.
You (the car manufacturer, that is) want to use some exotic induction system or engine block for your race car.....well no problem, just make it available on the production car to homologate. Simple as that. Unlike the Speed World Challenge, where you can petition to slow down the faster cars that just beat you....in the old days of Trans Am, your only choice was to build a faster race car....which meant a better street car for people like us.
Not only was the original Trans Am series thrilling to watch and follow, as the factories spent millions to develop cars and win glory, but the enthusiasts who bought these cars from the dealer on Monday had all this racing tech filter down into their street cars.
I mean Jeeeze, 35 years later, here we are, still talking about it.

Re: IROC series
The old american super touring series was great, too bad it didn't get the manufacturer support that it has in other countries. If anyone gets a chance this winter, watch some of the touring car action on speed channel, especially the british series or the austrailian v8 guys

The Boss Mustang and this little version of a Camaro called the "Z28" came about strictly and exclusively to participate in the Trans Am Series.
It's great alot of LS7 development came about because of the World Speed Series, but again as was pointed out, in Trans Am if a car was quicker than another, it was up to the competing company to build a quicker car (that also had to be in production).... not whine to the officials to make the other team slower.
That's how NASCAR's vehicles got watered down to where it is.

Re: IROC series
Well, if they still want to have the 5.0L rule, GM has a 4.8L LS variant on the shelf. Or just take the LS2 and destroke it to the appropriate length. Hmmmm... that would be a fun car on the street. And with a good exhaust, sound absolutly insane. A second pushrod V8 with a 7K+ redline, but this one would be 2L smaller than its 'Vette big brother.
BTW, when I lived in England, I loved watching the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship), WRC and F1. All three have some of the best racing/drivers in the world. Perhaps the Speed World Challenge could have a separate division for Camaros/Mustangs/Challengers etc so you wouldn't get of those embarrassing situations where the z28 beats out the zo6 (oops ). Heck, include the SupraTT/300zxTT/FD Rx7s, they're all the same drivetrain layout and would bring a little more veriaty, let alone kicking the Japanese makers into stepping up on the performance of their current iterations.

Re: IROC series
IMHO I think the ALMS series is one of the best racing series in the states today. Gotta love team Corvette's dominance in the series to
Be nice if the Camaro would come back and race in the series, I think Mustangs still compete in a lower level in the series.

Re: IROC series
It would have been nice to have seen a '02 IROC T/A pkg. in production.
Back in the late 80s early 90s, there was a series on TV called the Firestone Firehawk series that used production cars in different classes all in the same race. I remember the Camaros/Firebirds were in the same class as the Porches 911s.
Does anybody know if this series is going on, maybe under a different name?
