I would imagine it was a tad bit more exciting when the throttle cable stuck at WOT in my '85 Trans Am. Fortunately, I was able to cut the ignition and coast off the freeway without incident. Whoo, that steering gets HEAVY w/o boost!

My old corsica didn't seem to safe or reliable when the throttle cable got stuck.
Most of the time it's the T/B linkage which could still happen by wire...only you can't stomp on the pedal and possibly free it up by wire.
Or if you potentiometer pedal fails and the PCM thinks you floored the pedal, you still have to shut down the engine, or will there be some verifying programming or something?

You guys that dont want drive by wire..electronic stuff. etc....
What the hell are you going to do when there are NO more cars that have mechanical linkage, what are you going to do when it is all electronic/computerized.
I mean, there is always an aftermarket part to get around it. And if it starts impeding performance...then i wont be happy, but saying you "dont trust it" just makes you sound like a dumb redneck who only trusts his truck, and his dog, and his gun....get over it.
Its called technology, and evolving, quit being whiny bitches, and just drive it.
