Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
just as long as it has similar power to the other 2 contenders, ill be happy. although a 427 will be nice, i dont think we will see it in the first year production . i like the 6.2L idea though

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
I'd like to see a 302 devoloped. I know GM came up with one during the late 4th gen to make the motor eligiable for Trans AM competition, but never threw it in a production car.

The original 302 small block was developed because the Trans Am series rules requred a production motor of no more than 5 liters. But that production displacement rule went out the window decades ago. There's not been a connection with the displacement in the street car to the race car in Trans Am for a long, long time.
The 302 LS series motor GM did for that one Camaro had NOTHING to do with the Trans Am series at all other than it was a nostalgia piece to connect back to the 1st gen Z/28.

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
We'll know more about whether Camaro will need a real monster motor 450hp + when and if Ford sells the thousands of GT500's it says it plans to sell each year.
Can you believe the numbers that we throw around here without blinking? Unreal! 450hp Camaro......pinch me....NOT!

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
Man…… we have just been dreaming around here the last few days.....
I'm not going to hold my breath for a super Camaro anytime soon.
I don’t expect anything more than the LS4 and LS2 for the first few years.
I doubt we will ever see the LS9 and the LS7 is still probably a far stretch.
Everyone remember HP doesn’t sell cars.
Now reason aside… I’d love to stick my foot in my mouth from the comments above, but I still think a 500hp factory Camaro is pushing it.

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
I can't imagine having more than two different V8 displacements. That would give three engine choices including the V6. But I guess that the Mustang offerings may dictate what gets offered.

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
Puh-leez guys... Everyone knows that by 2009 Chevy will have realized they made a great mistake going to the LS1 and will revive the LT1 to let it herald the great throne of Kick-assery it has been denied all these years
LMAO.
I would expect about 360hp Z28 and about a 390-430hp SS.
The numbers being tossed around are rediculous.
As long as they make an affordable V6 model, a competitively priced model for the Mustang GT with comprable power, and a more expensive model to compete with the more exotic mustangs(ie: Rousch, Cobras, Shelbys).

i think the line-up will see something along the lines of this:
3.9-250hp LT
5.3-325hp RS
6.0-400hp SS
that would be a nice round start for engine choices at launch. every model gets a 75hp increase over the one right below it.
then 18 months later we get an LS7 powered Z/28 at about 475hp..... .....hey i can dream can't i?

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
here's how i think it should go:
Base model (RS):
3.9L V6/240 HP
SS (midlevel):
6.0L LS2/400 HP
Z/28 (top level):
6.2L LS3/450 HP
Keep it simple. We don't need 900 different engines and trim levels. The base model takes care of the V6 mustang, has it covered by 10 HP. Give the RS a different intake/exhaust package or something similar, raise it's output by another 10 HP.
The SS will take care of the Mustang GT. Have a ram-air/cowl induction package, less restrictive exhaust, etc. and add 10-15 HP for that package.
The Z/28 will take care of the DaimlerChrysler SRT-8 vehicles. 450 HP should be more than enough to do that.
There's no need to go any higher than that. As for pricing, the Base/RS models should go for $22K-$24K. SS could go for $26K-$28K, try and stick as close as possible to Mustang GT prices. Z/28 should NOT go over $30K. This will translate into better sales - it's faster and cheaper than the SRT-8 vehicles, by a long shot.

Re: Let's talk engines for a minute....
The way things are going in the hp department I wouldn't be suprised to see a 450hp Z in 2009. It seems like the big three are starting to go ape**** with it. Ten years ago we were looking at 275hp lt1 as the regular production big dog for GM. Now we're seeing 400 hp in a GTO and Vette. With the pressure that the next Cobra and whatever else Dodge decides to do with the hemi, I think it's possible and probable in three or four years.
