Lutz: GM mulls 4-cylinder engine for new Camaro

Hmmm indeed....seems Bob isn't too concerned about the "Iron Duke" comparisons that some here lamented....
The V6 Camaro won't outrun the V8 Mustang, especially when the redesigned Mustang debuts shortly after Camaro. So I wouldn't consider that possibility.
"Premium priced" scares me a little. A couple hundred dollars over a comparable Mustang is not, IMO, a "premium". Premium to me means $1,000 - or more. Suspension might be better, but I wonder about that interior.

Very intreresting . I can see the 2.0 DI turbo ecotec being quite popular with many kinds of enthusists outside of the typical camaro enthusist . These arent the days of the iron duke , the latest boosted ecotecs are more than capable of producing ridiculous power #'s .
If GM wants a large conquest sales rate and a younger audience , seeing the 2.0 DI engine and the DI 3.6 in a RWD car with a manual trans will definately give them a big leg up on the competition .
Im not surpised one bit about the pricing , I thought alll along Lutz was on crack saying they will be matching the price on the Mustang . I didnt really see how they were gonna pull that one off with the direction they are going .

So will a premium price over the Mustang put the Camaro into the same price range as a G8? So the base Camaro would be priced like a V6 G8 and the V8 LS3 would be priced like the G8 GXP? That would put a V8 Camaro in the Mid 30k range. Instead of the Mustang's current upper 20k price. I still have hope of a LS3 Camaro for 32k without Nav. or other useless options.

"Lutz said that if fuel prices continue to climb, the four-cylinder Camaro could see production."
I'll take that as confirmation that it will definitely be built. Does Lutz, or any of us, actually think that fuel prices won't continue to climb?

Nothing wrong with making a profit, but hard to make that profit without moving the product. I suspect the Camaro will move pretty well for the first year or so, well healed baby boomers will cash in their 401Ks to put one in their garage, but I suspect it won't last long, much like the GTO.

When I saw this thread over @ GMI, i expected a complete conniption going on over here. Surprised its not to that level, yet. The dreams of a v8 for under 30k seem to have faded. Looks like I'll be keeping the c5 for a couple of extra years til they hit the auction circuit. Good news is, it might just be paid off by then.

I think that the writer may have been confused about the different versions of the DOHC 3.6
He specifically quotes the power level of the CTS but fails to mention that there are two variations of the 3.6 in the CTS.
The base version has 263 HP, while the [B]Direct Injection[B] model has 304 horsepower.
He may have confused his Caddy's leading to mixed ratings
By the way, MPG estimates of 17 and 25 for the V6 arent too good,
didnt the LT1 F-bodys have the same ratings?
