The first couple years of the 3rd gen Z28 had a fiberglass (I think) hood with openings at the top. Its a small opening, but functional. This style
For the 5th gen an aluminum piece to fit in the mail slot with Camaro embossed on it might look good and smooth out the front.

Yes, the 82 and 83 Z28 had functional flaps that opened with the gas pedal. It was cool to see, I think you had to be careful going to car washes with it though!

Hmmm....I remember those hoods from "back in the day", I even considered, test drove, and gave a good look-over to a brown 82 or 83 at a used Chevy lot. I never realized that the black "plugs" actually opened up.

....guess I learned something tonight .

My Dad talked me out of it (and I got my 78 Z28 instead) being that it belonged to a friend of his that died from a heart attack and his wife sold it back to the dealership....kind of creeped him out I guess.

LT1 Camaros... had a dual fake opening in the hood. I always liked them... the LS1 camaro hood was so long and didn't have anything to break it up... it was boring! Here is a picture of my old camaro.

They only opened up on the CFI (cease fire injection) cars. On the LG4 / L69 cars they did not open.

More trivia, besides the total lack of performance, the real driving force behind the cease-fire nickname was the propensity for the flaps to leak rain into the air cleaner and then down into the cylinders, eading to hydrolock.

The early thirdgen TA with the power blister hood also had a functional scoop at the back of it. IIRC, unlike the camaro, the TA actually had a version of the carb air clear that could use the scoop too.

The 80-81 Z28 had a similar functional rear facing scoop.

It might, when combined with an open backed cowl, serve to bring cooler air across the manifold? That is really the only function the hood openings serve in the Challenger.
