I just hope the hype doesn't die down by the time the Camaro actually comes out...people might have forgotten it by then

 

I dont think it will, it be coming out soon enough that the hype is still going to be there. I was at our Major show this weekend & was passing out posters of the new camaro (the press relase posters) & had people asking me when they were coming out, of course I all I said was SOON.

 

Most of those car will be the V6 cars which help all of us. Like it or not that helps with the F'N CAFE rating and boosts sales for the car but, will still leave plenty of the V8 cars for the true Camaro folks here. If we're lucky there will be enough different colors to set some cars off from each other, or a couple that will only be offered for certain years.

 

Actually, outside the car people and enthusiasts, the 'hype' isn't quite what we all here think it is.

MANY people don't even know the Camaro is coming back (I've found some that didn't even know it was gone the past few years). My father just told me yesterday that he had someone comment that they liked his current car ('06 Eclipse), to which he told them it's nice, but he's going to trade it for a 2009 Camaro (after I have mine of course). He said they didn't know anything about the 2009 Camaro, or that there was even a concept in 2006.

If not for me, my father wouldn't even know. (My mother would only because she saw a quick blurb on the news back in Jan '06 and was going to tell me about it, but I already knew.)

The multitude of the buying public knows (or I should say KNEW since Transformers has brought it to a LOT of people's attention) next to nothing about the Camaro. So they won't be as desensitized as many of us may be by the time it's released.

A guy I work with who is a total import guy even said the Camaro really was gorgeous in Transformers. And that 'when it's realeased it's REALLY going to sell'. Will it manage to drag him out of his Acura TL? I doubt it, but at least it managed to impress him.

 

All these people like them and most will probably try to get one I really hope chevy dealers don't try that stupid surcharge bullsh!t.

Yep and even on this board a lot of the people who are aways complaining about wanting hud, t-tops, dvd navigation, air-conditioned seats, etc... won't even be buying one. I'm passing on a new Vette right now because I'm waiting for this car! I guess I'm waiting an extra year anyway though because I will be getting the Z28.

In addition to the “hype” factor, I’ve been wondering for some time now whether or not by the time the new Camaro is actually available for sale if the “new” Camaro will look very dated and, consequently, not very desirable by most of the people interested in a sport coupe???

When you look at what the competition will be in the 2009 model year, a car that looks a lot like a ’69 may be far less appealing to the broad public than it is to the enthusiast community who has been waiting for several years just for the chance to buy one.

Just sort of thinking out loud here…I don’t know one way or the other.

 

This car isn't coming out in 5 years though. It's coming out in a year and a half. I don't think the design will be dated by then. Plus, how much does it really look like a '69? Not all that much IMO.

I also think that even though the transformers movie will have been out on DVD for over a year when this car is released GM will still have access to certain promotional material for the Camaro and Bumblebee to help get awareness out there.

 

I don’t want to turn this into a “is it retro or not” argument; my personal opinion is that it looks VERY much like a ’69 (and was intended to do so). However, “retroness” is not really my main point.

Regardless of how much it does or doesn’t remind one of the ’69, my main point, is that when you compare the Fifth generation to other sports coupes that are and/or will be available at the same time, it just seems to me that it runs the risk of looking “dated” in the minds of those most likely to be thinking of a sports coupe.

What got me thinking in this direction is that I recently looked at a large collection of pictures from the NAIS and the Camaro stood out to me as just not looking as modern/”up-to-date” as some of what is out/coming out soon from other nameplates.

Who knows, that may turn out to be a very good think for sales!

 

Go watch Transformers....the crowd reaction when Bumblebee reformats from the '74 to the '09 is HUGE. People are nuts over how the car looks. Transformers is going to give the '09 camaro a huge boost. WAY bigger than the RX-8 with the original X-men movie...

 

Were the car available now it might make a small difference but spots in movies, especially movies this far out from a real car being available will not make the Camaro a sales success...being "nuts" about a fake car in a movie is a lot different than walking into a dealership and plunking down cash.
