The same could be said of Corvette, several Ferraris, Viper, etc. Not everyone buys track-worthy cars for the track.

Exactly.

EDIT: Oh, and as a distant second point to follow these, lots of people DO take convertibles to the track. Not that I am plan to, but there are many who do. Is the coupe a better starting point for a track weapon? Sure. Does that mean one cannot take his ride to an open track day or whatever and have a ball? Nope.

While I understand someone questioning the validity of building a convertible on a top end platform like the Z28 or Z06 or ZR1 it's important to note that while going convertible on these platforms ultimately defeats the purpose or original intent of these cars people (and a huge number at that) still want the option. One of the biggest gripes about the Z06 is that it's not available as a drop top. If it were GM could probably sell another couple thousand a year (before the market tanked). The other big grip4 about the Z06 is the fact you can't buy an auto. Hence all the conversions.

While I have no problem with the Z28 being released as a coupe only, I was just curious if the vert would also be offered. I may not buy it in vert form but trust me people will line up to buy a drop top Z28 if it's available.

I would tend to think that GM will offer the Z28 in a convert. Ford offers the GT500 in a convert. I understand the all out performance and why GM doesn't offer a convert for the Z06 and ZR1 but they are all out performance first sports cars and play on a much higher level than even what a Z28 could do. This is where the Camaro as a Pony car needs to offer a full lineup.

Again, opting for the hottest engine combo doesn't automatically imply that the car is only intended for people actually going to a track with the car.

Some people want the thrust that comes with 550 hp, even if they hardly ever attack a corner at more than six tenths. Some just want bragging rights (witness people buying GT500s and putting a few hundred miles per year on the car).

If the Z06 (or ZR1) came in convertible form, it would be a dream for me. I've driven LS6 and LS7 Vettes, and I get tingly just thinking about them. But if I were getting a Vette it would have to be a droptop, which means base / Grand Sport. I'd have to play with the engine to get Z06-style thrust.

Plus, it isn't like a droptop Vette is a limp noodle. And with the freaking bridge-girder 2010 Camaro platform as a starting point, I'm guessing a droptop Camaro won't be too bad either. We aren't talking Toyota Camry Solara convertible here.

As others have said, the existence of the GT500 convertible is reason enough.

In any case, since I'll not be dropping $50k on a new vehicle anytime soon (if EVER), I'll have to wait several more years to maybe pick up a used one...
