Muscle Car Racing series?

Muscle Car Racing series?
How successful would a racing series be with Race cars built from stock vehicles, including the Mustang Camaro and Challenger? Other makes could compete if they build something in the same category, Ie the Infiniti G35 coupe, the BMW 3 series coupe or M3, etc. Using internally stock engines, and stock intake manifolds. Also with stock body panels, dashboard, etc. This way it will still hold that visual link to the street cars.
Personally, I'd like to see this, with 80% road course (LeMans, Daytona type) 18% oval (Indy anyone?), and for good measure, a drag race (1/4 mile of course).
I think this car would have a very good chance of being a Indy pace car, I'd also like to see it win a race at Indy. Maybe a 20 lap race or something, even an undercard for bigger races like Indy 500, Lemans 24 etc.
Maybe AMCS, or American Muscle Car Series.
As long as it didn't turn into a horsepower war that hurts the actual production car profit wise, I think it'd be good for the cars.
any thoughts?
yes, kind of like how Trans Am used to be.

It would be nice to see the new versions of the the Camaro,Challanger, and Mustang tearing up the track just like the good old days. Maybe I would get back into racing myself.

A re-run of the Trans-Am series with these new cars would have me tuning in to watch! What self respecting Camaro, Challenger or Mustang fan doesn't want friendlly bragging rights over one's buddies?

Re: Muscle Car Racing series?
They had pretty close to this with the "Motorola Cup" series back when LS1s were still being produced. As I recall they had several LS1 birds kicking *** and taking names over 99+ style Stangs back then... Speed Channel used to air them some, haven't seen it in years though.
I did see a "SCCA American Sedan" (Sedan, WTF they're coupes) series on Speed in the middle the night a few weeks ago. Had, third and fourth gen Camaros tearing it up with Fox body and newer Stangs, all the way up to a 05 Stang or two. Was pretty cool, don't recall what was winning, think it was a 4thgen Camaro...
{EDIT} In searching some online American Sedan seems to try to bring back the original Trans-Am series, 5.0 liter limit, etc. However I'm 99% sure there were 4thgens racing in this series when I watched it, wonder if they were running smaller engines than stock or what...

Re: Muscle Car Racing series?
I do hope they put an engine displacement limit on this race (if anybody ever does start it up.) I say set the limit at 7.0L like they did in the old days in some classes. That would help persuade GM to offer a 7.0L motor in the new Camaro for sure!
It might also help bring back the 426 Hemi, but in "small block" form.

A 5.0 liter limit using regular production heads and blocks (no limited aftermarket crap like the 5.0 cammers) would work pretty good since any of the manufacturers could destroke current offerings to fit the rule. (LSx motors, 5.4 mod , 5.7 hemi). I'd say further limit engines to a maximum of 2 cams and 3 valves, but if you wanted euro and asian cars to compete that'd wipe out like 150% of them.

Re: Muscle Car Racing series?
Back in the '80's we had the Canadian Players/GM Challenge, where F-bodies raced. Here's some of the cars...
IIRC, the cars were specially ordered, built by GM Motorsports, and featured many safety & performance upgrades - but not unlike what many people on this board have built for street driving. I think the series only ran for 5 years or so, and didn't survive long enough for the 4th gens to enter.
The series consisted of relatively short races (1/2hr to 1hr), and were run on various road courses (including some in the States, I think).
Jeez, it's hard to remember this stuff... and I'm showing my age!

Re: Muscle Car Racing series?
You want a racing series to be a success in A.D.D riddled America, it needs to run on an oval. People get very bored watching a slew of cars pass the straight or at the end of the straight in turn one every 10 minutes.
