I'm more interested where the bulk of the money ends up. Not the stops it makes along the way.
I percieve that Japan is far too jingoist to be part and parcel to any North American success story which doesn't involve most of the money going back to Japan.

As long as the work is done well, I personally don't care where it's done.
That's been my biggest issue with off-shoring (or "Best Shoring" as the company I work for puts it). It is generally based totally on cost with no accounting for quality at all. There's a lot of management people who seem to think that they are special and unique, but everyone else in the company is plug and play, able to be swapped out on a moments notice. Somehow the clue hasn't hit them that there is a reason why profit margins are up but income is down after a major off-shoring effort. End of rant.
I may be an American, but I live on planet earth and I'm happy to support the efforts of anyone who's willing and able to do quality work (as long as they aren't also trying to kill my family or anything).

I think I hear your point ... you don't feel the Camaro is "American" enough since it's being developed in Australia & Canada. But keep in mind, I'm sure a lot of design/development work has been done right in Detroit too, and I'm sure they've done a lot of testing at Milford??
I think at least some of the reasoning for building the Camaro in Oshawa is to make up for the closure of Ste. Therese where the 4th-gens were built?
Canada is basically "America Jr." ... don't worry about it!!

+1 I still don't understand why most American's don't understand that. I had a big arguement about this on Saturday with my gf's cousin (who owns a Toyota), it's not hard to understand. We have a Toyota plant here locally, but it's just a stop on the way for the big money, not where it actually ends up.

I wish it was here for sure. I use to live 10-15 miles from the Van Nuys plant in California that closed in 1992. I understand though. Australia is developing because it's basically their chassis. They have a plant in Canada, and they're getting a break there. The japanese plants here; they don't give the kind of long term benefits the American companies have been giving( that are killing them) do they?

I think this is a tough debate because of the economic status of the U.S. I really wouldn't care where they made the car at as long as it is quality, but on the other hand you have thousands of people losing their jobs due to outsourcing. With me living in Detroit I see firsthand the destruction job outsourcing and downsizing has been here in Michigan. I had a lot of relatives and friends are out of work because of this. I don't know who to point the finger at this or if you can point the finger but it is a mess up situation.
