New Camaro Model Kits Now Available

Finally Revell and AMT have released model kits based on the production Camaro. These new kits should have a lot more detail than the Concept kits that came out a few years ago.

I prefer Revell over AMT, I think Revell usually has a better quality product. Although the last kit I built was the Camaro Concept by AMT, and the quality was pretty good.

It looks like the Revell kit is going to have options like the body kit, wheels and stripe pkgs.

The AMT kit box doesn't indicate any optional equipment.

I am pretty excited about these kits, I haven't done any modeling since the concept and that was back in '08. The state of the modeling hobby has been pretty sad. Major dept. stores don't carry models anymore. Model companies are coming out with less new kits. I saw the Revell Camaro SS model kit today at a hobby store and it was $26.95...... Holy crap almost 30 dollars for a 1:25 scale plastic model.

Here is my Camaro Concept model I built back in '08

I agree with you. I was looking at model kits at Hobby Lobby a couple weeks ago and came away with a case of sticker shock.

The picture on the packaging is of a V6 RS. Hopefully the model is actually an SS like it says.

The Revell model is an SS.

The AMT model is indeed an SS.

Re: New Camaro Model Kits Now Available

I grew up in the late 60s - early 70s building models - I could always collect enough coke bottles, turn them in to a liquor store and scrape up enough $$ to go by a kit at a Dept. Store.

It's sad to see prices so high as to make a fun hobby nearly inaccessible to youngsters.

I kid my self into thinking that I'll build one again and buy a kit when a local Crafts Store sends a 50% off coupon in the mail - or find a 40% off coupon on line.

I've noticed they've been disappearing the last 5 or so years too and now you pretty much have to go to a hobby store to find them.

The last I checked it went up to $16-$18 dollars back in 2003 or something(been buying die-cast) and I thought it was the store just overcharging. 2 weeks ago I went to a model store and saw the above AMT model and I also saw $26 and I was SHOCKED.

I think we don't see them as much because the die-cast pushed them out. I mean I got way more Jada models than my own painted ones. It's easier and you know how it will look as you select the finished product. With the kits, it's a toss up sometimes as hoods don't fit, tires look like 4x4s(like Ertl's of the past) and the flimsy nature of it. I used to use plastic cement, then I learned to use crazy glue.

Now the Jada die-cast are going away, I don't see them at Wally-Mart or Target, if I do it's the same ones that no one seems to want.

I'm waiting for the ZL1, hopefully Revell will come out with one. I will buy it even if it's $26. I will definitely be more choosy and buy less because of the price.

Re: New Camaro Model Kits Now Available

I haven't heard anything about a ZL1 yet, but its really early. I know AMT is working on the convertible for a release later this year.

I am betting Revell will release ZL1 at some point. On the Corvette Revell has released a base C6, Z06 and ZR1 kits.

Revell has a large scale 1:12 I believe, of the Mustang GT500. I would really like to see a Camaro ZL1 done in a large scale. That would be a fun build.
