NEWS: Report: GM to launch special edition Camaro every six months
Filed under: Performance, Chevrolet
You think there were a lot of special editions of the Bugatti Veyron? The Europeans ain't got nothin' on muscle cars when it comes to low-volume derivatives. And for its part, Chevrolet doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon. Just the opposite, in fact... at least, that is, according to the latest reports.
Word has it that Chevy is planning on rolling out a new special edition Camaro every six months for - hold on while we take out our trusty old Autoblog abacus - two each year! The new ZL1 that debuted in Chicago is said to be the first in a long line that is expected to be followed by a new Transformers edition for the upcoming sequel Dark of the Moon. After that we should see run of 500 replicas of the Camaro SS Convertible that's set to pace the Indianapolis 500, and then a limited-edition Camaro Synergy that'll offer buyers a V6 with all the performance bits you'd expect from the V8.
If the reports prove accurate, that ought to take us through the end of next year. Beyond that, Chevrolet reportedly plans on tapping in to other historic Camaro variants for future specials. Have a thought or two on the subject? Tell us what special Camaro you'd like to see next - you never know who might be listening.

Although Oppenheiser would not confirm it, Chevrolet is expected to offer a limited edition 2012 Transformers edition, linked to the Transformers: Dark of the Moon movie that opens in July.

Agreed, that is a horrible idea. I also thought the XM Camaro is an aweful idea as well. I actually think the god aweful Transformers movies have done more to hurt Camaro sales than they have helped, just my opinion.

the way it sounds is that the transformer edition will be redone and the pace car will be one of the limited edition, but i also think the synergy edition will be the one we see more of than any other kinds. i would think a new synergy edition at least once a year.

well i know. but what im saying is that if they plan on bringing out 2 new editions every year, at least 1 every year will be a synergy. the other could be a pace car or transformer or whatever, so it probably wont be something like a "z28" edition.

Okay - no were did it actually say the "Transformers Special edition" would the new Z28.
My guess for the "Transformers Special Edition" would likely just be a SS, with a Bumblebee body kit, and and the Bumblebee paint. And maybe with 21" rims and tires.
I tend to think that the Z/28 will actually be more of blend of the SS and the ZL1. Basically think of a SS with a tuned LS3(i.e. Ram Air & exhaust), and Suspension, and and break packages from the ZL1.

No it didn't. However others have suggested that the next gen movie Bumblebee may have hints of the production Z28. If that is true, all I was suggesting is that the Z28 (model) not be used for a "Transformers Special Edition".

for the most part the american public LOVE those movies, and it has made people adore the camaro. Its the smartest thing chevrolet could have ever done imo. Its given them waaaay more advertising than any comercials ever could have.
also, the z28 isnt gonna be called "transformers edition" or whatever. Im sure they're just gonna do a "sticker package" like they did last year. It will probably be available on every trim level like it was last time. I also doubt the z28 will fall into this limited edition every six months thing. Its gonna be another trim level they are adding. It was kinda sad to read that the zl1 was supposedly one of the limited editions. I hope thats not true because I was hoping it would stay around the whole life of the 5th gen. We know they are gonna do more synergy cars, so with those and one other "gimmicky" package that could round out the new edition every 6 months. I dont like those kind of packages, but they do sell cars, so im all for it.

even ifthe ZL1 goes away, that doesnt mean their not gonna make another model with the same motor. it could use the same motor but have a different look, or suspension and be called something totally different. if this is only a limited run, that just kinda goes to show that the next car(Z28 hopefully) will stick around as part ofthe lineup.

For the non-enthusiast, I would have to say the new Hawaii Five-O TV series has done more to help Chevrolet sales, including Camaro. Its one of the most popular shows on TV, and its on every week. Heck seeing McGarrett and Danno driving around in the Camaro RS has even made me reconsider whether or not I even need a V8.

Little kids love Bumblebee and because of the movies might get into Camaros... when they're old enough to drive. Adults who aren't enthusiasts are not going to warm up to Camaro because of Transformers. People like my wife consider it a joke.
