As far as im concerned the 350z is not a competitor stock, i walk them in my GTP i have no respect power wise for them.
Maybe GM is underating the camaro like they do alot of cars? I cant see that the G8s performance will be so close, the camaro has to be faster.
One thing is for sure GM better back up all the hype with some numbers, or i feel the camaro will not get the respect its name has made.
It should be a modern day affordable competitive fast car like Camaros always have been. I expect no less

They were never rated as such I don't think. Also even though they were more difficult to launch, stock for stock the manuals were probably really ETing the same with higher trap speed. But I believe that both the Camaros that Evan Smith ran into the 12s stock were manuals. The Z28 definitely was, I don't remember if the SS was.

I'm confident that the SS will perform well relative to a 350Z, but I worry that getting leapfrogged by the 350Z's successor a mere 6-8 months after the release will make GM seem short-sighted.

Maybe they're already working on something to address the 370Z... I hope.
I wouldn't worry too much. The 350Z is a competitor based on the class of the vehicle, not the performance. The 370Z is gonna be a minor incremental improvement in terms of performance. I think a lot of people (not necessarily you) are getting their undies in a bunch for no good reason. It's a competitor based on it being a 2 dr coupe in the same price range. To keep the Camaro alive, they need a better target for style and quality then just the Mustang.

It really comes down to, we are gonna buy it or we aren't. I've seen a lot of people here that are giving lots of excuses for not buying one. No offense to the 3rd/4th gen guys, but Chevy has given us a a car with lot's of potential and great looks that IS within keeping of improving the Camaro breed and much higher quality. I remember that myself and many of my 3/4th gen friends were amazed at the difference and ride quality and interior quality between my new generation GTO and their old rides. I like their cars, but never wish to go back on the improvements.

This is gonna be a fine ride, just wait until we see what a difference a cam makes in these things. Look at some of the G8's in Austraila, they are a cam and LT's in the 11's (with more weight). You've got a bigger LS based engine with LS7 style heads/intake. This should be fun.

The 370Z should be more than a minor improvement over the 350Z considering the power increase and more importantly the loss of 200lbs.

What does that matter? Nissan don't have a V8 in the 350Z last I checked?

Even Smith did drive the famed 99 Z28 6M to a 12.89 and then a 2001 SS 6m to a 12.96.

Having many many passes with 4th Gen SS's and Z28's six speeds and autos this is how it is.
The Z28 with higher profile tires and a softer rear suspension will 60 ft better and is easier to lauch than the SS and it's more stiff suspension. The SS seems to have a bit more top end speed. Guess the hood does work.

The auto is much easier to launch than the 6-speed. Brake torque it to 1600 rpm and when the last yellow lights let off the brake and squish the gas quickly and she'll get 2.0 to 1.9 60 ft's. My 02 Z would hot lap over and over within .1-.2 each run. Deadly bracket racer and I've won my share.

6-speeds are harder to launch esp. on the SS or WS6. But they have more power due to less loss in the driveline. It shows because the trap speeds are higher. Shifting to 4th about 100 ft before the stripe sucks with 3.42 gears.
