NEWS: Camaro ZL1 will have automatic option, offer ZR1 traction system
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Chevrolet, GM
The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will go into production in the first quarter of next year, and now, Al Oppenheiser, General Motors' chief engineer on the Camaro, has confirmed a few details about what we can expect with the range-topping muscle coupe.
During the Camaro homecoming at GM's Oshawa pant, Oppenheiser stated that in addition to an automatic transmission option, the ZL1 will be available with the same Performance Traction Management system found on the Corvette ZR1. In the Corvette, PTM incorporates launch control, as well as the normal traction control, active handling and selective ride control systems.
What's more, Oppenheiser stated that the ZL1's output numbers will be higher than the originally estimated 550 horsepower. The ZL1 is powered by the same supercharged 6.2-liter V8 as the Cadillac CTS-V.

I now know what to tell my wife I want for my birthday next year.
And it would be even better if BBOMG was on the same weekend as this year and I could take delivery in Oshawa!

No one knows, but here is my personal answer...
Take a look at the price of the closest competing make and model.
Factor in any additional features that the competition doesn't have (Magnaride, etc.)
I'll bet we are not far off using that logic.

Finally a V8 Camaro that gets the auto without cylinder deactivation, so it actually has a chance of not sounding like crap from the factory. The auto should out do the manual in the 1/4mile by a tenth or 2. Off the line this thing is gonna be mean with the auto!

I never understood why people that didn't want the auto were so against people having the option. Sounds like manual owner snobbery on many of the Fbody boards. Ford would probably sell more GT500's if they were to offer the auto option, it's a bussiness and the bussiness is to make money. Chevy can steal some of the high end muscle car market by offering the auto option. I don't like green cars but I don't complain that Chevy shouldn't even offer green as an option. Having the auto option doesn't limit the manual guys in any way, I wonder if a lot of the manual crowd is upset that the avg guy in an auto will be able to take them at the strip and their ego can't take that.

I found it odd that it took GM this long to confirm the auto. Seemed like a no brainer if the ZL1 was to get the LSA from the CTS-V it would get the trans options too.
While I'd probably not purchase a ZL1 with the auto I do think it's important to have the option just for the number of potential buyers who wanted it.
Not to mention on the drag strip the auto will probably perform better in getting all 550+ HP/Tq under control.
