For all of the 'true drivers' that cannot fathom an automatic ZL1 but cannot give a legitimate reason why, how about petitioning GM for a 3 speed on the column? Wouldn't that be a 'true driver's car?' You know, really make the driver feel connected to the machine?

Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic

I'm torn now. I am definately getting a ZL1, but I don't know what I want as far as coupe/convertible, and manual/auto. I'm on my fourth camaro. 1 auto, 3 manuals, 1 convertible, 1 t-tops, and 2 hard tops. Part of me says I want a pure performance machine and that means coupe and manual trans. This car won't be a daily driver and my wife drives a stick fine so no problems there. The part that makes the decision hard is if the auto is actually faster than the manual.
I am shooting for May of 2013 to purchase my Zl1, so I still have some time to make my decision. I'm going to drive my buddies SS/RS auto soon so that should tell me a lot about the automatic.

What is 2010 5thgen going to do when manual transmissions cease to exist? LOL! That day is coming sooner than you think. I would be very surprised if the C7 even has a manual as an option.

Are camaros still going to be used for racing? If so I don't think manual transmission would be going away.

Putting manual transmission puts more control to the driver.
From what I read automatic transmission is not allowed in racing.

Maybe it is if you press the pedal and do quarter miles, but I am talking about a competition among drivers around a track.

There is hardly anymore control with a manual than with an automatic that allows you to manually change gears. You could skip gears easier, but that is of dubious benefit on a racetrack.

And for the vast majority of people that casually track their car it wouldn't matter because they certainly don't have rules against autos at the local road courses.

As far as people professionally racing these cars, they probably aren't starting with a ZL1, but if they were they are probably using something other than a stock manual. Perhaps a sequential gearbox, in which case what GM offers doesn't matter whatsoever.

hey, i have 3 automatic cars right now. a hummer, silverado and a camry. the only car in a manual is the camaro...because it should be. i use it for accasional racing. and there is a added bennefit of racing with a manual as opposed to a traditional auto. and yes...the c7 will have a manual. they would be idiots not to have a manual. just liek they would be idiots if they didnt put an auto in the zl1. even though i dont think it should...they do it because theirs drivers who want the laziness of not shifting, and the option just makes them that much more attractive to other buyers.

Hes not the only one who would be highly irate over something like that. I went to the GM ride and drive and the guy I rode with in either the Camaro SS or The Corvette Grand Sport suggested

"Manuals would be likely legislated out of existence. Not many people left who can drive them anyway"

I told the guy I wouldn't consider the car without manual. Im hoping he didnt know what he was talking about. I can not think of a reason for it not to be offered unless the company decided.

i guess we have a reverse opinion on auto and manual than europe. a guy that works with me has a girlfriend who lives in england. she said that manual is the standard option over there and majority drive stick. if you want an auto, you have to have a special "license" to get it. apparently automatics are frowned upon over there. so if GM plans on dumping the manual......they may lose more than just some US customers...... why does europe understand the whole manual concept, yet americans are drifting doward auto?.......were lazy! they also hate chrome......

I'm a manual fan, too. But Ferrari and Lambo are going all automatic. Not torque converter automatic, but dual clutch (with no clutch pedal) autos...

Porsche, however, will still offer manuals, as long as buyers keep buying them. I imagine the Corvette will be this way too, for the foreseeable future.

As for the legislated out of existence comment, I imagine he meant that as emissions standards get tougher and tougher, it may not be worth the effort and expense to certify engine calibrations for manuals, especially if only 3 people are buying them every year. Automatics are easier from an emissions standpoint because they don't interrupt power and close/open the throttle (introducting sizeable, momentary transients in the air/exhaust stream). Autos and manuals are certified separately on the EPA test cycles, so it would be much cheaper to only offer one option if the volume isn't there to support the other.
