NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic

Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
I was thinking of calling into the podcast to say what I did in this thread already, but I don't know if I need to.
ZL1 auto = Afterthought
If GM was planning on an automatic all along, they should have announced it when they announced the ZL1 at the Chicago autoshow.
Now it seems like they caved and put the automatic into the feet of the one foot driver.
Is this decision to have the ZL1 in automatic delaying the released of the ZL1? Sure some of the spyshots show a ZL1 like car with auto, but do we really know what was being tested on that car?
Is the ZL1 like the SS also going to have AFM, and make this 580hp car run on 4 Cylinders? Will it also have a HP reduction like the SS?
You know what would be funny, I want someone to get a ZL1, and use it as their daily driver. Don't worry about rain, snow, or anything else. That would totally make my day
I can actually see that happening now that they are offering it in automatic.

Not necessarily. It might have been a situation where they needed to build a business case for it, and they wanted to utilize the public reaction for that after releasing the manual.
They monitor and process feedback more than you might think.
They have to build what people want to buy if they want to sell cars. The problem is, they cannot figure that out based on guessing no on a single factor. It takes a lot of time and research or it can be a tremendous financial mistake.
The nice part is, they will no longer hear "I would buy it if it had an automatic.". I think if anyone said "I was going to buy one, but not after they will make them in both manual AND automatic." Anyone that says that is A) Nuts. B) Wasn't really going to buy one anyway.
I would think no, it is not delaying it. If so, not by much.
I wonder that one myself. When I had AFM and the Magnuson on my car, it worked out okay.
I have seen worse, that is for sure!

I don't know for sure if it was considered, but definitely not used for cost reasons. Even a detuned version would put the Camaro into (or even past) CTS-V and Z06 range. It won't be cheap as it is.

yeah i know. but im wondering if they didnt do the ls9 because an auto cant be mated up to that kind of power and still last....well, not chevys auto at least. and i think the zl1 is already gonna be past the cts v as far as power goes. and i think it may be a pretty close race between it and a z06. z06 is still gonna take it but numbers may be close.

Which by the way, they still could use ambient lighting in the dash, a glovebox light, and I think a storage compartment for sunglasses or such would be nice as well.
Also can the pockets on the side doors be increased a bit, they barely hold maps.

Daily driving a ZL1
I have seen worse, that is for sure!
I personally know someone who daily drives his LS3, and I parked next to this SS this past winter. I'm glad to see people driving their cars.
I bet the ZL1 would be fun on a frozen lake!

The CTS-V with the auto/LSA does not have AFM, and I am betting that the ZL1 with auto will not as well. I know the LS3/LSA had a lot of vibration issues with AFM, hence that is why we have yet to see it. The L99 is based off the LS3 but has thicker piston walls to avoid any type of vibrations.

GM is SMART making an Auto available for the ZL1. I wouldn't personally buy it, but I bet a lot will, and they'll sell a lot more because of it.

Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
I imagine there will be a handful of people that drive them year round, rain, shine or snow. Even if they didn't do an auto version. There were recently a couple of threads on one of the Shelby sites asking for advice on which snow tires to put on a GT500. And the Shelby people as a whole are WAY more fanatical than the Camaro guys. At least in my experience.

Re: NEWS: Chevy expects over half of all Camaro ZL1 models to be automatic
Actually the 6L90 auto transmission can handle well over 600HP and well over 600 lbs of torque. The 6L90 transmission is a beast and is EXTREMELY durable, so this notion that is some sort of weak and flimsy transmission is just absurd. What really is going to put the whole GM auto is inferior argument to bed is when GM releases the C7 in a year and a half, which is supposed to have as an option is a DSG type of transmission, but until then the A6 is plenty enough durable and "fun" for the ZL1!
