Arrow NEWS: Report: GM builds 100,000th Chevrolet Camaro

No matter which side of the Mustang/Camaro divide you fall on there's no arguing that Chevrolet's reborn entrant in the pony car wars has been a hit. It's been less than a year since production of the 2010 Camaro began at General Motors' Oshawa assembly and the 100,000th example rolled off the line this week. The milestone car was reportedly an inferno orange SS.

Ever since last June, the Camaro has been outselling its chief rival,, the Mustang, despite the Mustang's refresh at around the time of the Camaro launch. Ford, however, left out one important aspect in the 2010 redesign, the powertrains. That oversight has been addressed for the 2011 model year, and the Ford vs. Chevy battle begins anew next month. That's when 2011 Mustangs will start rolling off the line with power on par with the Camaro, along with the significantly better interiors that carry over from 2010. We'll be watching this horse race very carefully over the rest of this year. Hat tip to Henry!

When's the last time GM built 100,000 Camaros in a year?

When's the last time GM built 100,000 F-bodies in a year, for that matter?

I am trying to think of where someone posted the initial goal was 80k, and others were saying that it would never even come close...

The Cult of the Camaro Crow Eater is growing!

Welp, that's roughly 400,000,000 lbs. of Camaros that have been produced.

Maybe this is what really shifted the earth off it's axis and not the Chilean earthquake.

Honestly, I think these sales numbers have saved the Camaro. Internally at GM, some had already previously considered it a dead man walking.

That 5.0 motor is gonna be a problem for Camaro owners when it comes out. A high 12 second NA Mustang from the factory. Hopefully they will at least offer a gear option on the 2011 Camaro's to help out.

Only for the tiny fraction of us that give a damn about actual performance as opposed to those who say "426 hp is more than 411 hp, so I win."

Yeah I always get a kick out of the you have to pay a premium for 400+ horses, when it fact my old car was just as fast with 310hp, weighed 500 lb's less, and purchased brand new in 02 for $19k. Even with inflation the new Camaro are way more than the old one. I can see the brakes being more and the IRS but the V8 option itself isn't costing GM and extra $8k over the V6. I doubt the 6.2 is that much more expensive to make than the LS1 was.

Keep in mind that your old car had more like 340 horsepower.

Not true; assuming 4% inflation per year and comparing MSRP to MSRP for a 2002 bare-bones Z28 vs a 2010 1SS, the 2010 is slightly cheaper.

AND...

Finally there's the proof how EPICALLY AND COMPLETELY DUNDERHEADED IT WAS to let the F4 languish for years, kill the car, and then bring out a Solstice, Sky and (my personal favorite "dumbest car evar") the SSR.

As if the 400 million pounds of material didn't exist anywhere on the planet and just materialized out of thin air.

Sorry... thinking like an engineer again.
