OnStar tells police that the car is at the intersection of state route ## and state route ##. Police get there and no car. OnStar sez.....YES.....it's there. We'll blow the horn and flash the lights. The car was hidden in the brush with the infant still in it. (any of you have kids?)
Case #2. Owner of a TrailBlazer hits a guard rail, becomes airborne, and launches over a hill. The TrailBlazer is now hidden from traffic. Owner is unconscious. OnStar knows the vehicle has just crashed...calls police, and owner is rescued before bleeding to death.
Amazing technology, and great stories. I say the technology is worth it if it has saved one life. Not to mention the potential for tracking and recovery if your pride and joy is ever stolen!
.......now........
I don't know about you.......but I feel damned safe having OnStar in my vehicles. I also know that it's illegal for big brother to watch you without a court order. And guess whot? If the court feels strongly enough, they'll track your every move WITHOUT OnStar.
If you don't like it? Cut the wires. But I'd really start to question your paranoia.

Hypothetically, would a new Camaro come standard with On-Star?

well if we started tagging everyone at birth, then kidnaping would almost become a non-issue, but that doesnt mean it's the right thing to do.

Re: OnStar on the new Camaro
I don't know if I'd characterize some of the sentiments here as "paranoia," maybe overly cautious, but not paranoia. Honestly, I'm not worried yet, but I'm getting there. No one can argue that onstar doesn't saves lives, or at least has the capability. The ability to locate a car anywhere after a hijacking or accident has clear advantages. Even being able to unlock doors and email maintenance concerns is kinda nifty too.
Still, I think history has shown that if you put the wrong person at the helm accidents will happen. How many times have you heard "abuse of power." Maybe years down the line when security is lax someone at onstar will look up where their friends are.
As long as we're on the subject (and, admitedly, this is probably better suited for the lounge) the Patriot Act is not something to disregard. Before you claim I'm a conspiracy theorist, or even paranoid, do yourself a favor and actually read the patriot act. A born in the U.S., American citizen can be stripped of citizenship and deported; theoretically, they could also be jailed indefanetly. These are things that can be easily swept under the rug as well, since there currently is very little if any oversight by Congress. In other words, no checks or balances on the legal issues at stake. If need be, OnStar could be used by the Dept. of Homeland Security in such an abuse of power. (Big Brother if you will)
Flame me if you want, but the risk IS there. It is a SMALL risk, but I wouldn't fully disregard it either.

Re: OnStar on the new Camaro
Something to worry about? Patriot Act-agreed. Onstar-not. BTW, again, for those of you who don't like it, don't get it. If it's standard, don't pay for the service or disconnect it. It's that simple.

Re: OnStar on the new Camaro
Like I said, I'm really not worried. OnStar is not Big Brother, even IF the government wanted to watch all the cars with OnStar the logistical demands are mind boggling. Now, misuse of OnStar through the Patriot act is more likely but still remote. If I bought a new car with OnStar, I'd probably keep it and not worry about it.
