People are expecting it to be a drag racer or road racer or autocrosser on the showroom floor.
I never cared much about options or sweated the details. I guess what I'm really wanting to know is the HP figures, quarter mile times, and how it looks, which you obviously can't divulge anyways.

But is it "realistic" to assume we'll have a performance option that'll beat the new Mustang Cobras? Or am I setting myself up for dissapointment.

EDIT: And yes, of course I know that it will be "competitive in today's sports car market."

HP and 1/4 miles times were not talked about. 0-60 is usually the benchmark anyway. It is expected to look very similar to the concept, but that was talked about somewhere else in another thread.

Possibly. You are expecting it to "beat" other cars..but in what? Quality? Straight line performance? Handling? Safety? Features? Price? Weight? There are too many tradeoffs and too many variables when comparing.

Keep thinking that and I believe that you won't get let down because like I said, I am very confident that Chevrolet has their stuff together on this one.

Well, I said a performance option, which would mean either handling or straight-line performance. In this case I mean straight-line performance.

That is all.

Here is my attempt at a brief and realistic expectations for the Camaro.

A model that will compete with every level of the Mustang, along with some areas that the Mustang doesn't cover such as handling.

A clean, simple, purpose driven interior that is simple enough to be cost effective but nice enough to give us a GTO style or better fit and finish.

A complete car that is free from unexplained rattles, unsure handling, and weak components that break under normal and intended use.

I see no need to get into specifics since I trust that GM is going to offer us alot of great little gadgets to fill our hearts content, I just expect the basics to be covered, past that I want to be surprised.

Will Z/28 be the top dog?

Will we have to wait a year for the top dog?

Will production still start in late '08?

Are console gages under serious consideration?

Realistic = 5-star crash (all around), 31 mpg hwy, 0-60: 4.8 seconds, awesome handling = yes or no?

Will the production speedometer be easier to read?

Totally subjective question: When getting in the car and closing the door, does it feel like you're sitting in a cockpit, or just a car? In other words, does the interior sort of envelop you (like the 4th gens did) or are things a little more spread out?

Pretty sure the answer to most of these questions will be "can't say" or "don't know" - but thought I'd ask anyway

In any case, I think it's cool you guys got to drive the concepts - thanks for sharing what details you can!

I think that I put it best here:

I think they know we want it but I am not sure how much consideration was put into it.

Not much of anything that specific was brought up.

We were asked for our thoughts on them at least once.

It would have to be.

Yes, it is subjecttive, but I will say this again...

Everyone else agreed.
I cannot stress how much it just felt RIGHT. It was a Camaro, without any question. It felt like that at 10mph, it didn't have to be going 60mph to feel right. The seat, the rake of the windsheild, the depth of the dash, the location of pedals and shifter and gauges, the steering wheel feel, how much of the hood you could see...everything felt just like a Camaro owner would want it to.

That day we only drove the convertible, but I got to thinking that I also drove the coupe last summer. I am not sure how many semi-regular guys like me got to drive both.

I like the idea of unbundled options, let me pick what I want for the most part. What about a Flex Fuel option, E-85 is what 104 octane? Paddle shift 6 speed auto.

Gas mileage is everyone's concern right now.

Paddle shift 6 speed auto.
I mentioned that one myself because if it was offered, I would strongly consider it. I do not know if there is consideration for it being included, though.

No Fisher Price styling on the stereo or controls like on the early 4th gens.

HUD and NAV options.

Strong rear end.

No achilles heel like past 4th gen (opti or weak rear end).

HID option.

True Paddle shifters not buttons like on the Vette.

Hybrid option?? With the gas prices increasing every year I might not be able to afford a 20-25 mpg (less once modded) car in 2-3 yrs.

I sat behind Setlemire when OctaneZ28 was driving. I'm not super tall, but I'm 5"11", and ummm, not thin, lol, and there was plenty of room for both of us.

Jason, Thanks for all you're doing!! I means a lot for me to hear a true enthusiast say that the car feels right and Chevrolet is trying really hard. Too many times it seems they were really close, but still missed the mark.
You've given me hope that this will be one car I have to put in my garage!!
(Now if they can just give me a car that dosen't wheel hop to death or is so uncomfortable my wife won't ride in it....cat hump...We'll be all set!)

So Jason......would you say that Chevrolet is more in tune with what most of us want than we might think?

--->thread jack <---

Have you ridden/driven (hard) in a current Mustang? Conceptually it is little different from a 3rd Gen F-body in terms of suspension and they receive high praise when it comes to handling, and there is the matter of the FR500C race car, they didn't rip the front suspension out nor replace the rear with some exotic super suspension. It is a race car based squarely on the production car and it was sorted out well enough that it out-handled its competitors (which boasted more complex suspensions) through the corners and created the illusion that the FR500C had a power advantage (when it really was comparable in power to weight ratio to its competitors) and this from an admittedly heavy race car)

--->end thread jack<---

If what I've read elsewhere is true - kudos to the F5 team for bringing in a car lighter with more power than the current Mustang and F4 cars at a price point comparable to the former.

--->edit on topic<---

Ease of maintence and easy modibility, always thought the windshield over the motor was kinda dumb - really liked the engine bay of the current GTO seemed kinda roomy given the dimensions of the LSx motors.
