Some good info although it has some innacurate info as well. No mention of any of the really high performance models. Still an interesting read.

There were 204,742 Camaros sold in 1979, but Ford still sold 304,053 Mustangs that year.... and that wasn't Mustang's biggest year! Sonic's not the only one needing some educating, I see.

2nd gen Camaro outsold Mustang ONLY in '76 (by just 5,000), '77 (by a much more respectible 38,000), & '78 (by a humiliating 60,000 cars). The following year, Ford returned the favor by absolutely smoking Camaro by a mind-numbing 100,0000 Mustang sales over Camaro.

Outside of those years, Camaro outsold Mustang in '71 (by a mere 400 cars!), and in '82, '83, '84, & '85 by varying amounts.

1986 was the last year Camaro was even close (4,000 down).

1987 was the last year (save '94) that Camaro even sold 6 digits (but still 55K less than Mustang).

1996 was the 1st year Mustang outsold Camaro 2 to 1.

1999 it grew to 4 to 1.

And that's not the worst of it.

In 2002, there were 35,767 Corvettes made.

Despite having a production year extended by 3 months over all 2002 models, there were a mere 29,528 Camaros.

Corvette outsold Camaro (yes, I mean ALL Camaros combined) by over 6,000 cars!

In 89 and 91 Thirds did again. Then 4ths did in 94 and 95 only. Thirds were the only Gen where the Camaro outsold the M*stang 5 years. IIRC, combined the F-Body outsold the M*stang 8 years.

But if it was 81, Grandma would have been in a 55 horsepower 2 speed auto Civic - so you still would have been king of the road in your Camaro

Yea, one of the most ridiculous comparisons, to me, is to compare cars years apart from eachother.

Re: The Rise, The Fall, The REBIRTH!

Of course there's always the argument that Firebird and Camaro actually competed with each other more than the Mustang for sales. Aside from cosmetic differences, by the third gen the cars were so very close that it's hard to tell them apart.

And so goes the argument that you could combine Firebird and Camaro sales vs. the Mustang from at least that point.

It will be interesting to see how well the 5th gen Camaro will stand by itself.
