Runflats?

Pros:
-save money by not buying a jack and spare w/ the car
-lighter (the car, not the tires)
-the safety factor
-more storage space in the trunk

Negatives:
-Cost/Hassle of tire replacement (limited selection of tires, finding a shop that can do runflats.
-performance loss at handling limits due to stiffer sidewalls

Discuss.

Re: Runflats?

I'd rather have a spare and have some great tires. That being said, the runflats nowadays are pretty good..

Re: Runflats?

I'd rather have normal tires. Hell if it came with Runflats I'd be buying a jack anyway because I would be putting performance tires on it anyhow.

However as an option it could be appealing to consumers who more want the style of the car and arent concerned about corner carving.

Re: Runflats?

I'd much prefer regular tires...As an option it'd be fine but I don't want to be forced into getting run-craps.

Re: Runflats?

What about those tires with carbon fiber in them? I hear they're pretty good. They could be on the top dog....or top top dog like a ZL1.

Re: Runflats?

Even the Z06 comes with runflats (and hits 1.0G+). Todays runflats have very little disadvantage to them. Runflats all the way IMO.

Re: Runflats?

I doubt runflats are gonna save any money over a corporate jack thats identical in every model and has been paid for since 1956....

I would not mind them, but I doubt we'll get them, cost and ride issues. I think I would rather have a spare. Even with runflats you're still obligated to go to the tire shop. With a good doughnut you can go for a while if you have too.

Re: Runflats?

Weight savings wouldnt be much with runflats. These tires are heavy compared to a good performance tire. But it does open up possiblties for a better designed interior.

True. Wouldn't they be able to lose significant weight by dropping the entire spare, and jack setup though? Not to mention saving space. I don't have any problem with runflats, and if they're good enough for the Z06! Hell we want the engine, why not the tires?

I agree, I would much rather have the space in the car and less crap(jack and tire) in the way. Plus you can always buy regular tires later.

Re: Runflats?

And honestly, I'm pretty sure none of my vehicles has a spare/jack. I just keep a tire plug kit in car/truck.

Re: Runflats?

If you don't think the runflats are an issue, go to one of the Vette sites. The runflats are one of the gripes of a lot of the owners. Not saying GM won't do it, but if they need to put all the jack, etc for the V-6, they would probably just do the same for all models. I think if it was really cost advantagous, we would see it on more models than Z06. Imagine an Aveo with runflats
