While you certainly can cut the roof off of a coupe to build a convertible, even back in the day GM added additional cross-bracing to make the ragtop 1st gen F-bodies more stable to address the "missing roof issue". I would guess (although I don't have the proof) that is the same today with the 2011 Camaro convertible. Furthermore, the beauty behind the design of the 4th gen Camaros, is that all coupes were given the same roof subframe construction whether they had t-tops or not. While this did add additional weight, it made production costs cheaper and also fairly easy to convert a non t-top coupe to a t-top.

Since the 5th gen coupe was not ever designed with a t-top in mind, none of that strengthening was added as it would've added much unneeded mass above the center of gravity. Unless this shop is adding additional bracing to offset the missing roof, which nothing suggests they are, this is going to reduce safety, much more so than the factory built convertibles that will be designed to be topless.

I don't care how good you think it looks (I happen to own a t-top car myself), its still a ridiculous conversion if it isn't done correctly.

They'll be reinforcing the body to recover lost rigidity...

I'd like to see the finished product from this company but again, I thought that was probably one of the main reasons they didn't offer them this go-around.

The company already did a convertible conversion. According to the website they already made it available to buy the conversion for about 18k so I guess they do something besides the hacksaw treatment...

it isn't for everyone... that's for sure. GM had to meet lots of regulations something this shop doesn't have to do since it's an aftermarket thing.

Begin is safe is good and all... but if we are going to bring safe into the picture... well the guys that own motorcycles totally missed the picture...
