tow catch 5th Gen?

Maybe I just dont know where they are. I got my 98 stuck in mud in the rain and the best I could come up with is hooking a chain to the bottom mount of the radiator. I had been trying to get it out for hours with help. Not smart but it was burried to the axles it was raining and I was tired. Same with my first gen. I got a flat and the guy with the roll back wraped the chains around my axles and front suspension.

what do you think? Simple cheap inconspicuous tow catch? Nothing more than metal bolted to the frame to get a chain on or for the rollback guy to use if you break something? Dont know its real name.

If theyre there and I just havent found them ignore this...

You shouldn't be driving your Camaro in the mud in the first place.

Re: tow catch 5th Gen?

I've gotten my Z stuck in the snow a few times, and it is a royal pain in my *** climbing under it to get a tow hook into the hole in the k-member...

What an odd idea........ to Southern Californian... I think "watch where you're going" would be the best solution.

Sure, so long as you can't see it, wouldn't want to mar the looks. Maybe the screw in type like some german cars have?

I've never thought of it before, as I haven't gotten my 99 stuck, traction control + the torsen works suprisingly well for driving out of a muddy patch. Even my 95 without ASC was pretty good in the mud (grass parking lot + heavy rains) on fresh Firehawk SZ50s.

I agree with that - if it's going to cost any measurable amount of money, leave it off and let individual owners put one on themselves if they're in the habit of sticking the car. JC Whitney sells them pretty cheap to the jeep crowd....

R&D? You serious?

Its a plate or bent tubing, with a hole, bloted to the frame, hopefully somewhere convienient but inconspicuous. One on the front, one on the back, maybe 1/4 pound combined. It would keep tow hooks off your suspension when you break something at the track.

I had been working on my 68 C-10 wiring harness this time last year. I had finnaly got a day that wasnt rainning which happened to be my sunday. I was working on the wiring harness removing pins and replacing wires and recrimping them which took me all day and the sun was just setting as I was putting it back together. I drove it around the block, and halfway around smoke started comming out under the hood from that same harness. Im good arent I??? It was raining but I had 38" tires so I thought nothing of pulling over out of the road onto the grass. Disconnected the battery cable and I ran home in the rain about 1/4 mile grabs some tools and drove back in my 98 Camaro. I thought the ground would be fine just parking across from the truck in the grass and would be easy to just grab the tools out of the car. As the chilling rain was pouring down at 8 PM at night I was trying to tape up wires with a flashlight in my teeth, shove them back in connectors and get the truck running to get it home. I was cold tired getting soaked and fed up and thought Id simply leave the truck there till morning, and drive my Camaro home. The car just sunk. A neighbor helped out with a F350 work truck but there was nowhere to hook a chain to. He had his grilfriend with him who was doing all sorts of helpful things like putting bricks under the front tires to "give them traction" while both of us were pushing from the back. If you could picture the 3 stooges with a 4th gen Camaro buried up to the axles in the rain, you would begin to have a mildly accurate idea of the situation. I gave up when the helpful "traction" bricks under the front tired burried them too.

My neighbor who lives right next to me knocked on the door, asking what the hell was going on when I answered coverd in mud. We went back out with his full size 4X4 chevy but same problem as with the F350, no where to hook to. Also all he had were tie down straps but that had to do at the time. He convinced me to hook to the bottom of the radiator mount against my better judgement but by this time I was out of ideas. All I could picture was the radiator flying out under my car ending a perfect day. Luckily with two people pushing and me easing out on the gas it wasnt an issue. I got that car out, drove it home and came back for the C10 which we towed the 2 1/2 ton beast home literally 2 foot off his bumper.

Say what you want about me, but $8 tow hooks would have saved me hours. Same goes if you get stuck in the snow, hit black ice and run off the road, get stuck in a ditch, the list goes on.

I may catch hell for this, but Ive owned a few cars some hondas where the tow catches are hidden and have been extreely helpful. I dont know how the Germans do it, but if its similar bolt on yes. I think they were on the front of my 82 RX-7's as well. I cant imagine they would be more than 5-$8 per plate one front one back, would cost next to nothing to engineer. Theres nothing to them so it wouldnt be a weight issue. If you get stuck in the snow or like I did it could save you hours or headache or hooking it to something youd rather not.

The german ones I've seen have a small square body color panel in the bumper, about the size of a match book. Pop that cover off, and there are threads. There's a hook in the tool kit that has a threaded end - screw that into the threads, and you have a perfect tow hook. And it's up high, so unilke some underbody tow hooks (or hooking the thing to the k-member on a 4th gen), your cable doesn't wrap up into the bumper and damage any bodywork.

You can see the small square panel on the left side of the bumper, just below the rub strip here:

And here's the threaded hook:

It all sounds good to me but how do you keep something like that from backing itself out?

Haven't used it myself, but haven't heard it being a problem on the BMW boards. That's a lot of thread engagement, I don't think it would spin once you applied a load to it.
