Re: A twist on the Z28 vs SS debate

ok how about something totally different that will never happen, but it would be good if it did.

camaro RS, basically a appearance package and "luxury" items

base rs 5.3 or v6
Z/28 HO 5.3 or ls2, must be high revving and LIGHT. i would say 5.3, IRS

SS LS2, solid rear axle, basically a base camaro with a big motor

SS/RS, solir real axle, with appearance and "lux" package

this list is not in order of whos on top. it would probally work out that the Z/28 and the SS/RS would probally cost about the same. making the both top dog but in different ways, which is how it was and how it should be.
Z/28 for the guys that want a road racer, hence IRS and the SS for those who want all oout straight line performance, solid axel no wheelhop.

also to add, JakeRobb, im not sure what going on with youre GN, but i think it should be faster than that, they go into the 12s easily. do you have enough fuel for that boost??

Well if the White book is acurate those would be the 2002 RPO codes while Z28 would be the model not the RPO. Z28 is not listed as an RPO. So if you had a 2002 Base Z28 I imagine it would be. The last year was 1974 for Z28 RPO

2002
RPO
1FP87 Z28 Coupe
1SC Option Group Base ( Z28 Coupe)

Where as in say 1969 it would be
1969
RPO
Z28 Performance Package

RPO codes being in bold...

Re: A twist on the Z28 vs SS debate

According to this poll, 60% of the respondants have owned a Z/28 and 20% have owned an SS (Camaro).

Huh? The RPO sticker in my car clearly shows "Z28" with the other option codes (such as the C49 rear defogger, LT1 engine MM6 trans, 731 red interior, FE2 suspension etc, etc).

My info says.... Z28 : MERCHANDISED PKG, SPECIAL PERFORMANCE

My biggest problems were traction and heatsoak.

That 13.6 was on no-name street tires. We have a set of BFG DRs, but at the time it would have been two hours of driving out of my way to pick them up before going to the track, and I didn't have time. It's only been to the track once since I bought it last summer. The previous owner said he ran a 12.9 on the DRs, but I'm not going to take credit for a run I didn't even see, let alone drive.

Hey Scott, as long as you keep it in moderation, I'd rather you were drinking than smoking. To that end, I'll be at Bowling Green in September. I hope to meet you!

Re: A twist on the Z28 vs SS debate

All 4th gen Camaro coupes were model 1FP87 and convertibles were 1FP67. The Z28 was an option.

on 4th gens....Z28 should be shown as an option on the door sticker. In the 1996-97 model years, an SS will still show a Z28 code -- but also R7T -- which was the code to send the unit to SLP for conversion to an SS. (they removed wheels/tires/hood/spoiler/suspension pieces/exhaust/etc -- and upfitted to an SS.

In 1998, the option for the SS became WU8. 1998-02 SSs were built as SSs at Ste. Therese with exception of hood and spoiler -- a 'slave' hood was placed on the car at Ste Therese for the short trip to SLP's LaSalle facility -- SLP would then add the SS hood and spoiler -- along with any other 'second sticker' content. The cars would then return to Ste. Therese for a quality check -- then turned over to Gen Auto for transport to points beyond. (virtually all 4th gen Camaros and Firebirds coming into the U.S. came by train. -- exceptions were when we needed to expedite vehicles for one reason or another --- such as firm delivery dates to the Indy Motor Speedway when we had a deadline to provide pace/festival cars -- there were additional costs incurred to ship via truck)

That said, we made it clear that there would be no Z28/SS -- and asked SLP to remove any references to that. (history proved that there never had been a Z28/SS -- so why start now??)

Hope that clears the confusion.

Re: A twist on the Z28 vs SS debate

well well well...........

as of 12:53am on May 25th, the count is as follows:

Z28 top dog: 116
SS top dog: 128

Sooooooooooooooooooooooo.................let me make a declaration here:

SHUT UP ABOUT THE MONIKER!!!!!! AS YOU CAN SEE, WE CAN'T AGREE --

Chevrolet will be the one to make the call -- some will win -- some will lose. For those of you who lose -- REMEMBER this poll!!! It proves once again that anytime we change anything on a Camaro, some will love it and some will hate it.

Re: A twist on the Z28 vs SS debate

ok....I suppose I should tell you what my preference is:

when a person says "I drive an SS" you know two things:

One -- it's a Chevy
Two -- those are my initials

however -- when a person says "I drive a Z28" -- there's no question as to what he/she drives. The Z28 has become a brand unto it's own -- just as "SS" has -- however the SS covers a good portion of the Chevy lineup.

So...........if it came down to ME making the decision -- I'd go with Z28.

NOW............THAT said: I still defend our monikers on the 4th gen -- for many reasons as I have explained many many many times before.

(so sayeth Fbodfather........ )
