The ULTIMATE Z28 vs. SS thread. Where all Z28 vs. SS posts go to die...
#106
Yeah I really can't comment because in the 60's my parents were in elementary/middle school.
But if you assume those numbers are SAE gross then that 4 barrel was making ~350HP net. I personally assume that the numbers of the factory 302 were probably not all that off, but that it was perhaps a bit corked up. Even small mods are mods, so if you touched anything it wasn't stock anymore and so a lot of the anecdotes might have to be disregarded.

I posted two dynojet runs earlier in the thread on two stock/near stock 69 Z28s, at 240 and 245 rwhp, similar torque.
I don't know what they were doing to come up w/ the numbers above, but the street car wasn't coming anywhere near 400+ hp near stock even if you convert back to an estimate for gross flywheel HP.
And no matter what number you attribute to it, there is no way the factory 302 was going to outpower the L78 396, you only need to look at the specs on paper for the two.

Well I certainly can't tell you what they were doing as I was in my late teens back then. What I can tell you is that the book was published in 1991, the documents I pulled the HP numbers from were part of an Inter-Organization Letter (I assume that is an inter-office memo) signed by G.D.Thompson-Engineering Lab and J.R. Landis-Engine Developement Department Head and went to 14 different people, one of which was V.W. (Vince) Piggins who was behind many GM high performance projects. It lists a Z/28 four bolt case engine 19632-10A, service grind cam 0-304871 (.527"/.492" lift), Dynamometer headers 30" pipes to 3-1/2" collectors, cylinder heads 1.60"-2.02" valve sizes .050 milled. So, either the letter/results in the book were fabricated, or Chevy was blatantly lying in their test data/memos, or I completely fabricated all of the above, take your pick as you have stated that it is not possible. I did not attribute any HP numbers to the DZ 302 engine, I merely shared some data I found, take it for what it is worth (obviously you think it is worth nothing).

Screw you guys all its teh IROC that rocks lol.
Sorry had to.
But I happen to agree with some people in here, The SS could be anything, The Z28 is strictly Camaro.
Out of all my Camaros I have owned, None of them ever has had a SS on them.
RS, Z28, Type LT, Iroc, RS/Z28 But No SS.
(currently own)
71 RS/Z28
87 Iroc
89 RS
95 Z28 (Zhawk)

That would be contrary to the history of the Camaro as well as every other car GM has labeled with SS. SS is always the top of the line. I can't see them changing that, regardless of the wishful thinking of the Z28 badge fans.
