What kind of Image does the Camaro Portray?

What kind of Image does the Camaro Portray?
I got to thinking when reading the commercial ideas thread that we each have a bit different idea of the Camaro’s portrayed image.
Its has to have a cute side some say for the potential lady buyers, it has the history of a tire melting drag racer as well as a history of a corner carving road race car, some see it as the bad boy alternative to the Mustang, others think of it as the all American pony car and so on.
So when you think of Camaro what imagery comes to mind?
Past that what do you think Chevrolet should advertise as the Camaro’s image?

I think there's no way you're going to cover all the bases in one commercial. THe ad campaign needs to have 2 or 3 different spots, each highlighting something different about the car.
Run the V6 commercials on Lifetime and the Z/28 commercials during NFL games & NASCAR

When I think Camaro... I think of a cool wind blowing across your face as you cruise down the open road, raw power and rumbling exhaust... hot rods and muscle cars idling in traffic on a warm august night down Woodward Ave, Sunset Blvd or Main Street USA.
I think that's the universal connotation that comes to an enthusiast.

That's good Chris!
GM needs to create a total image makeover for the Camaro to the general public. Sure there are cloisters of enthusiasts like us who are just nutty about all things Camaro, but sadly, start bubbling about Camaros to the general public and you'll get this - :blah:
The V6 HAS to be seen as cool, desirable, unstigmatized, insert your own word here, to the entry level, sporty car buyer. GM NEEDS to do at least as good of a job at this, as DCX did with the 300 and yes....Ford is doing with the Mustang.
And we have to help.

Its funny but its true. The V6 car needs to be portrayed as "fun" and liberating because the target is young adult women w/o kids. Being independent and being empowered is what these women want.....
basically if they can get the same feeling from a car that they can get from a man w/o all the commitment issues, they'll buy the car, LOL.
Your Camaro will never stay out late with the guys
Your Camaro will never forsake you for football
Your Camaro will take you shopping at a moment's notice
Your Camaro will even embarass your boyfriend's Civic

People go crazy over style, often before power and handling.
Sell the trend setting styling that we all hope will say "Camaro" and the car will sell on that merit alone. Add power and sharp handling, it will take care of the rest.

The 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird accomplished this in spades. Not to get into the "which gen is better" discussion....but it's true.
And why? Drop dead gorgeous looks for one, I suppose. My wife bought her '84 V6 Firebird for it's looks. I can't tell you how many single (and married for that matter), females I used to know, who bought new V6 Camaro/Firebirds back then. No stigma whatsoever....girls WANTED them.

since no one has said it.. i will ...
MULLETT!!
we need to get the MULLETT idea /association gone. Joe Dirt isnt the only one who drives these cars, even if thats what everyone seems to think...

That Mullett stigma is the problem I encounter too (no mullett for me). Everyone @ work thinks the Camaro is for mullett wearing guys who just want to go fast in a straight line. They also think ANY other car can outperform them in the twisties. I can't wait for our car to crush those beliefs once and for all.

I remember that ad My mom said the kid reminded her of me And she wasn't off, either. When I'm walking downtown here at lunch, I can still pick an old 2.8 multi port out of the crowd before seeing it, or an Iron Duke, or a Quad 4, or a 3800, or a...well, you get the idea
Anyway, Charlie hit on a key point with females and third gens. I remember seeing a TON of females in them when I was a kid. My mother bought her '89 RS (later MY '89 RS ) on looks alone. That, and t-tops. The car needs to have THE LOOK. My mom never liked the 4th gens, and neither did many other females.
T-tops will help too

yea, i agree. my wife's opinion of the prototype is that she wouldnt run out and buy it.. but you sometimes have to see a car in person before you konw you want it.
LuvMyZ i agree we have to shed the old Mullet look. I guess i feel it mostly cause i drive 2 3rd gens, and everyone calls them down here in the SC "redneck racecars" I guess they were the replacement for the Vega and monza huh?

The commercials that are supposed to make the Camaro "woman-friendly" shouldn't be driven by hot blondes. They should be driven by "girl next door" brunettes. Attractive, but not model-quality. Maybe an actress that plays a well-known television wife or mother. Maybe Carrie from King of Queens or Lorelai from Gilmore Girls. I think a woman like that would work better.

This is quoted from an Edmunds review on the '96 SS.

The poodle-swallowing hood scoop, giant tires, and distinct badges let every state trooper in the county know that you are a speed freak. The booming exhaust will annoy your neighbors, and the snarling engine burble will cause parents to clutch their children protectively when you cruise down the road.
Which brings us to an interesting point about the Z28 SS in particular, and the Camaro in general. Camaros have been stigmatized with an unfair reputation since their introduction. When mentioning the Camaro SS at a cocktail party, I lost the interest of the more sophisticated attendees who moments earlier were listening with rapt attention to my discussion of the Porsche Boxster. (The blue-collar rawness of the SS doesn't sit well with those weaned on caviar and Dom Perignon.) Mention Camaros at your place of worship, and be ready to receive the appalled looks of the elder matrons and clergy. Tell a prospective date that you own a Camaro, and you will find her looking at you like you are some proto-Homo sapiens, forever relegated to using monosyllabic words and occasionally scratching yourself where it is not appropriate.

They must be doing something wrong to warrant all of this negative attention. We think that it is because Camaro drivers drive fast, and as we all know from high school driver's education classes, speed kills. Not only do Camaro drivers exceed the speed limit, they usually do it such a way that makes the non-Camaro driving population look silly. By accelerating quickly away from a stoplight, Camaros can safely maneuver for the best lane position when traffic is heavy. With plenty of torque everywhere in the powerband, Camaro drivers can cleave through freeway traffic like a hot knife through butter. In other words, by stomping on the long, skinny pedal, Camaro drivers can exit the sad, slow world of minivan madness and sedan slugishness.

Re: What kind of Image does the Camaro Portray?
I am kinda pruod of the mullet stigma. I kinda read into it as saying that we are a bunch of blue collar, hard working, hard partying folks. No I don't mean an actual mullet just the maro mullet image. Hell that's what I think were all about, work hard play harder and be faster.
For commercials the only footage that comes to mind that I would say is close to my idea of the camaro image is Metallica's I disappear video. James ripping through the gears, jumping it, dougnuts, smokey burnouts and a whole lotta attitude. Hope I'm not the only one that remembers that video.
