Why call it Camaro?

With time, the Camaro name has developed a very low class image and will inherently turn a fair number of people off. Personally I feel the Chevelle name is a better choice.

Thoughts?

He could have suggested "chevette SS".

Flamming...please!

If people take a step back, they know full well what the Camaro image is. With GM's current finacial situation, they must think of the whole picture. Not of just a few loyalists who, for the most part, can only afford the car once on the used market.

I think the name Chevelle has a negative connotation for being the muscle car that every boy and his dog has... Besides, you can't have a Chevelle AND a Malibu in the same line right?

I think the Camaro name is well suited for this model. With GM's improving quality, I think (and hope) the cheapness of the overall previous models will be a thing of the past.

Re: Why call it Camaro?

The Camaro name has a tonne of brand equity and awareness. Yes it does have a stigma in some circles, but it's also known for being inexpensive and high performance. I think if the F5 would've been more modern it would have advanced and improved on the good parts of that image while minimizing the negative parts of that image. As it is, since it looks so much like the old ones many people won't update their mental picture and will continue to think of Camaros being low-tech and outdated. In other words, it's not going to get win any new converts. A modern design would've given people who normally don't like Camaros a reason to check one out.

From what I've seen I don't like the design and almost certainly won't buy one (even though I'm probably a bullseye on the target market). But I don't think naming it Camaro is bad. Even though I've owned Camaros I don't have any special attachment to the name, and it'll be just one more car scratched off my shopping list.

To be honest, I don't think naming it Chevelle would be bad. Since it's been over 30 years since the last one was made, few people associate the name with anything bad, yet it's still a very recognizable name.

Re: Why call it Camaro?

Camaro is one of the most recognized nameplates in industry history. It would be stupid not to use it.

I like it in part BECAUSE of the bad ***, kinda trashy image the name has. Like you, I've got a nice classy euro cruiser (I think it's in my sig) for whenever I'm not in the Camaro mood - but the Camaro mood strikes about 3 days out of the week, and it's a little like going out with a black leather jacket and a knife in my boot.

No to mention the name recognition. I can't imagine that nearly as many people have "Chevelle" on the tip of their tounges.

Re: Why call it Camaro?

It may have a slight connotation in some parts, but everybody knows well enough not to f*** with one. It holds VERY high street cred in just about any circle for its easy moddability and GREAT bang for the buck.
Around the mainstream people....I know a heck of a lot of people who loves Camaros more than any other car. Off the top of my head, atleast 15 people I know have had a Camaro and loved it.
It's a name that evokes passion. It might not be the best driving, smoothest, or fastest (atleast not all the time ), but it always had heart.

THAT is why it is being called Camaro.

Re: Why call it Camaro?

It's very simple why they used Camaro, because it looks like a Camaro. It would be stupid to make this car as pictured and then call it Chevelle. It's not a Chevelle, it's a Camaro. If they had designed the car with the Chevelle in mind, you might have a case but still the Camaro is far more recognized than the Chevelle. The Camaro is #3 behind the Corvette and Mustang.

Re: Why call it Camaro?

If the "upperclass" wants a sports car they are not buying a chevy anyway so they can kiss my low class, whitetrash ***. I don't see why all of the questions about the camaro image and the wealthy buyers. If they wanted a Camaro they would have bought them in the first place and we wouldn't be bringing back the nameplate since those buyers are supposedly the future of the camaro. Muscle car fans will buy it. If they didn't grow up loving american muscle I doubt they'll care whatever you call it.
