Apparently there have always been two version of the LS1: One built in Montupet, and one built in Nemak, Mexico. They use two different methods in creating the block, and apparently the Nemak block is a stronger, more performance oriented block. (The material properties were about 10% higher/stronger. Nemak uses a low-pressure precision fan process, more high performance oriented.). When the Z06 Corvette came out, GM decided to use the Nemak plant to build the LS6 block, since they built stronger blocks. So Nemak built LS6's, while Montupet built LS1's. Since there were so many LS6 blocks made, several made it into F-bodies. Numbers from GM are that about 10-15% of 2001 cars had LS6 blocks, and 25% of 2002 cars did. To confirm if your 2001-2002 F-body has an LS6 block, grab a mirror and a flashlight. Open the hood and head over to the driver's side to try and see the back of the left-hand deck, above the transmission flange. A cast-in #12561168 denotes the LS6 block. And if you aren't able to see the number, you may be able to tell by the block's luster-the Montupet plant cast a shinier block, the Nemak plant made the duller block. The Z06 block (LS6 block) is not only much stronger, it also has 87% better ventilation between bays, which equates to less pumping losses at high RPM's

Thanks, Greed4Speed for supplying the information.

On the LS1 the bottom of the intake is not flat., but they have the X shaped bracing between the ports.
On the LS6 manifold, it has a flatter bottom and 1 verticle w 2 horizontal ribs in the area between the ports.

Note the difference in the area between the ports and the LS1 having the bump in the middle.

The STOCK LS6's also do not have EGR provisions, unless the are fabricated.

I don't really trust some of these specs. The displacement referred to is questionable... (350c.i. -??).. anyway.. Good info as far as basic specs..


LS1 Specs
LS1 cam and head specs....stock and GMPP


LS1 generates 345hp at 5600 rpm and 350 lbs/ft. torque at 4400 rpm. Maximum engine speed is 6200 rpm. Compared to the LT4, it generates 15 more horses with peak power 200 rpm lower. It produces 10 more lb/ft. torque with peak torque 100 rpm lower. Chevrolet refused our request for a chart of LS1’s torque curve, but we believe it’s a bit flatter than that of the LT4. All this performance comes from a package weighing 66 pounds less and measuring half-an-inch shorter than a Gen II Small-Block. Some of us still compare today’s power ratings to the gross power figures of the 1960s. If that was still being used, LS1 would put out about 390-400hp. Most notable is that this engine is the first two-valve V8 to reach the one-net-horsepower-per-cubic-inch plateau. That is a monumental engineering achievement.

---I also found this interesting tidbit..(LS1)...---At top dead-center, an LS1 piston top is actually 0.2mm (.008-in.) higher than the block deck and protrudes into the space surrounded by the head gasket. A typical rebuild procedure is to machine or "deck" the block to correct misalignment or lack of flatness. Once the first LS1’s need overhauls, engine rebuilder will have a learning curve with figuring out how to deck an LS1 case and preserve piston-to-head clearance.

There are basically 5 free mods, all worth about 10 RWHP. I got all ths info from GM High Tech Performance Magazine, my own experience, and some info from this board.

You can also port your own TB. I don't feel like explaining that one so, Visit the website and read their instructions.



FreeRamAir Mod...or the FRA mod

To get more airflow on the cheap, loosen the factory airlid base by unscrewing the four 10mm bolts. Unsnap the airlid and remove it with the MAF still attached. The radiator support and the air dam both need to be removed both from the car. On the airdam, more flow will be seen by removing an area as wide as the slot down to the ridge. Use your choice of weapons--a jigsaw blade or a sharp utility knife will do the job, but a die grinder with a cutoff wheel works best--to cut a rectangular chunk out of the plastic. For the radiator support, leave the filter tray installed as a loose guide and mark around the insides of each square. Pull the tray out and grind away the two squares in the center area of the support.

MAF Screen

You CAN remove the MAF screen by gently poking it out from the intake side to the filter side. If you damage any of the three sensing units in the center of the MAF, you will have serious drivability problems and in turn will need a replacement.

This subject has been one of debate here at CZ28.com. There is no actual proven power to be had here. The screen is used to evenly distribute the incoming air across the surface of the sensing element in the MAF. When you remove the screen, tuning it now can be troublesome. (LS1 Edited) Puss, you can run the risk of sucking in forgotten tools/ parts (hose clamps) that have been mistakenly left on your air filter during mod install...

IMO, leave the screen on your MAF. The stock MAF sensor is also good up to a considerable HP level, so a 'high performance' replacement is not exactly necessary. Unless you are running some impressive flow #'s.

EGR Mod -Non LS6 intake

If you manually open the throttle, look inside. Where the EGR tube enters the manifold, in back of the throttle body, there will be a portion of the EGR tube protruding into the path of the incoming air. That needs to be chopped. Begin by removing the 10mm bolt that holds the EGR tube into the manifold. (from the top) Be sure to grab the O-ring seal, don't let it get loose int he engine. Pull the EGR tube up and chop the tube below the hat mount ridge. You can use a die-grinder or a dremel, what ever gets the job done. DON'T CUT THE MOUNT! There will be no way to remount the EGR tube if you do!

Once cut, remove the burs and shavings w/ a file or what ever works. Re-install and snug the mounting bolt back. It doesn't have to be insanely tight!

Drill Mod -For Master cyl clutch line.

The slave is buried under the power brake booster. You'll have to snake your hand and arm underneath to get it out (have patience, it CAN be done). Once you get it out, take a roll pin punch and remove the roll pin that retains the braided line to the master. The disconnect the fluid reservoir from the unit. Drain, but do not clean with water! Brake fluid absorbs moisture. You can use brakeclean if you want, but it could stain the plastic.

-DRILL MOD-
-THE ENTIRE MASTER, RESERVOIR AND LINES MUST BE REMOVED TO PERFORM THIS MOD-

Wrap the master end of the line in an old hose piece to gently hold the master end of the braided line in the vice (looks like a brake bleeder valve. sorry no pic) If you insert the drill bit into the line with your hand you can feel an obstruction in the line. That's what will be drilled out. Use a 7/64" drill bit. The website, www.InstallUniversity.com, says to use an 1/8" drill bit, but I felt it was too big. Gently drill out the obstruction, lifting the drill frequently to remove shavings. Keep the line and drill bit as straight as possible as to not drill through the side of the braided line!

Voi La! You're done. I bled the line about a dozen times to be sure I removed all the metal shavings. Now bolt everything back up.

This oil analysis study of major synthetic oil brands shows conclusively that it is better for an engine to leave synthetic oils (at least Mobil 1 and Amsoil) in the engine for at least 6-9k miles while periodically topping-off the oil and changing the filter around 4-5k miles.

This would also be a great thing to add to the sticky about engine specs. It will save people a lot of money annually.

Were the rods always forged for a LS1? In the Hot Rod link it says powdered metal. Did they switch? When?

I believe the HOT ROD specs are a little off. Also, some of the specs were 1997, 98, or 00 based. SO they might be a little off. I believe they are drop forged, or something to that extent.

AFAIK all stock Gen III/IV connecting rods are cracked powdered metal.

Hi, this is my first time on this site, not sure if i can ask questions here? i have a 2002 SS camaro. i'm looking for information on a 381 or 383 stroker kit. in particular, what are all the main parts i need to get besides a new crank. what is a good site to visit for parts, etc. i had a vortech supercharger installed june 07 & partial re-build (new block & crank bearings) + dyno/tune. recently, i had some problems with the vortech harmonic balancer, i.e., slipped & came loose and damaged my crank shaft. thus, i will just buy a new crank & have it machined with a keyway & may as well go to a 381 stroker. any feedback will be helpful, thanks.

Just go down a little from here and find the new thread button and make a thread asking any engine tech questions that you have.
