hey everyone. im learning all i can about camaros (currently own a v6 stang), and am particularly interested in the 3rd gens. i have been looking around on the boards and noticed some of you guy's 1/4 times. with a few mods, why are you all in the low 15s high 14s? please understand that i am in no way knocking you, nor putting you down. im just trying to learn why this is, as i may be willing to purchase my own 3rdgen z.
thanks

Well, the car is really heavy and the 3rd gen cars were designed as street cars. (Street light to street light = 1/8 mile)
3rd gens are horible on top end power unless you change the cam and heads so that the car breathes a little better.
In my opinion, thats all thats wrong. I can't do much about the weight but I can sure do a hell of a lot about the motor! Check the bottom of my sig and you'll see what's becoming...

1987 Red IROC-Z / 305 TPI / TH700R4
smoke show video's
Performance = Edlebrock headers / Bored out Catilitic converter / Flowmaster muffler / 3" exhaust cut out / MSD 6AL Ignition / Hypertech performance chip / 160 Thermostat / Hypertec pulleys / Posi 3.73's / Shift kit (?) / TC Lock-up switch / Dual K&N's
Other = Polished IROC rims / 255 rear and 245 front Michelin Pilot XGT V4 / Lowered 2" / '95 Camaro tips / 5% limo tint rear only / 12 speaker, 700 watts JL Audio system / SS Hood / Guages / GT Steering Wheel
201 rwhp 285 trq.
best time 14.687 @ 93 mph
In the making...
383 forged L98 / Miniram II intake / AFR 190cc heads / Costum grind cam / BBK 58mm TB / Costum tuned chip (4now!)/ 200 shot of NOS to be added later
Expecting ~400rwhp N/A

When basically stock (K&Ns, chip, muffler), my '91 Z28 5.7/4L60/3.23s would run 14.00s @ 99 mph all day long. It also got 27 mpg on the interstate at 75 mph.
Not all 3rd gens were created equal.

Remember the oil embargo in the mid 70's? Neither do I but I heard about it in history class Well the auto industry didn't have the technology until I'd say the early 90's to make a car with a lot of HP and still be able to pass emissions. Our 3rd gens had no more than 245 hp from the factory which is only good for a mid to high 14 pass. The earlier ones just get slower the farther you go back. But you can mod them and start to see some 12 second timeslips if you are willing to dump a few thousand into the motor. Heads, cam, intake manifold are all that it takes. A stock car with a Supercharger will run in the lower 13's with traction. A heads/cam ported TPI car will run in the low 13's if not faster as proven by Kevin91Z. They aren't that bad, they just had crappy technology back then

Did somebody say my name? The biggest problem with thirdgens and TPI is the intake. It supports a lot of torque but no upper RPM horsepower. There are lots of different intakes and free mods you can do to fix that, however. Read everyone's sig and see how they did it.

What irocz305 said pretty much sums up 1/4 mi performance. Where the F-bodies really excell is on top end. The Fox Mustangs stop pulling at about 135-140 where the TPI F-bodies keep pulling (at least mine does) to 150+. I've been clocked at 156, I've never been taken by a 'stang on the interstate. The built 'stangs do well on the strip but even they fall short on high top end and the stockers aren't anything to write home about at 14.75 - 15.50 1/4 mi times.

Hey guys,I have got a 1985Z that has ran 11.24 in the 1/4 and this is all motor no NOS.I have got a 355 roller, the heads are 23 degree and have 202 valves, the cam is a solid lift and has .555/.555 lift with 306 grind. I have got a Holley dual line 750 sitting on a Edelbrock Torker intake. The drive train consists of a TCI powerglide trany with a 4400-4800 TCI stall and the rear has got a 4.56 posi. This car also has full interior and has not been lightened at all.

Damn man... and I thought I had a big cam with .525, .525. I think we are talking streetable cars to. You must have to run that puppy on 114 octane dont you. Not to mention your idle has to be around 1400rpm. Crazy fun man, crazy fun.
Oh yea and I put about 2200 bucks in my engine and the car really moves. Just finished everything about 2 1/2 weeks ago, well not really finished still need to do some fine tuning, but yea. The motor should have somewhere around 450-500HP at the flexplate, yup got myself a auto *sighs*.
One more thing though, dont refer to Nitrous as NOS, thats a sin man. NOS is just a company owned by Holley Performance nothing more. Makes me think of that movie Fast & Furious, everyone was saying "NOS!"... great NOS... might as well say "Camaro!" everytime you see a car.

I have an 83 z and I bought it as a rolling chasis with all stock suspension and crap. I amt hrowing a 350 in there and I should be running a low 12 high 11. It all depends on the mods, weight, and traction.

I think the reason the Mustang 5 liters run quick is because they are around 300 lbs lighter than a 3rd gen. That means you need a solid extra 30 hp to the rear in order to keep up.

Well that depends on the 'stang, a Fox GT is real close, an LX is another story. And don't even talk about the SN 95s they are as heavy as our F-bodies. My son has a '95, what a POS.
